CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Freshman hurler Whitney Tuthill earned her first collegiate no-hitter on Saturday afternoon when the Boston University softball team (1-3) shut down Charlotte, 2-0, at the UNC Charlotte Green and White Tournament. Tuthill struck out three batters and was one walk shy of a perfect game. The Terriers faced the 49ers again Saturday afternoon but were edged, 3-2, to close out the afternoon.

Tuthill, who faced 25 batters, was near perfect on Saturday as she struck out three 49ers, and allowed just three base runners - one in the bottom of the first inning on a walk and the second and third on fielding errors. She is the first rookie to complete a no-no since senior Megan Currier accomplished the feat in 2007.

The Terriers' offense supported Tuthill with two home runs to give BU its first victory of the season. BU broke up the scoreless deadlock in the fifth when freshman Taylor Cowan went deep to right center, and senior Rachel Hebert gave the team a two-run cushion in the top of the seventh with a long ball of her own down the left line.

In the bottom of the seventh, Charlotte threatened to break up the no-hit bid when it placed two runners on the corners of the diamond following fielding errors, however, freshman Jayme Mask recorded the final out to preserve the victory and no-hitter.

In game two, Charlotte scored two quick runs in the bottom of the first on two hits, however, BU chipped away at the lead in the fourth and fifth on a solo home run from sophomore April Setterlund and an RBI single from junior Christina Valdes.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Charlotte pulled away on a solo home run to round out the scoring at 3-2, after retiring all three Terriers in order in the seventh.
