BOSTON -
Freshman Melinda Matyas made a name for herself in her first season with the Boston University women's swimming and diving team and capped it off as the most valuable player among the BU divers.
Throughout the 2009-10 season, Matyas was honored as the America East Female Diver of the Week an impressive nine teams - outdistancing herself from the rest of the field in the America East throughout the season's 14 weeks.
At the 2010 America East Swimming and Diving Championships, the native of Budapest, Hungary swept both the one- and three-meter boards and was crowned the conference's Diver of the Meet on the fourth day of the competition.
Matyas then qualified for the 2010 Zone A Diving Championships with her highest finish coming on the platform where she won the event with a score of 528.85. She also competed on the 1M (8th, 494.00) and the 3M (10th, 524.10).
To close out her freshman campaign, Matyas competed at the 2010 NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind., and placed 23rd (231.15) on the platform and 36th on the 1M (237.85). It is the highest finish by a swimmer or diver in head coach Bill Smyth's reign at BU, and highest finisher for a diver in the last 14 years under diving coach Agnes Gerlach-Miller's watch.
Before returning to campus in the fall, Matyas is slated to compete in the 2010 European Championships in Budapest in August.
