Juniors Macey Gaumond and Tabi Hatch scored two goals apiece to lead the No. 19 Boston University field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Bucknell on Saturday morning in the second round of the Conference Cup, held at Temple's Geasey Field.
Junior Jacinda McLeod recorded the game's first goal and added an assist all three of BU's goalkeepers saw action to combine for the shutout. BU (1-1) scored all of its goals in the first half and secured its first win of the season. The Bison fell to 0-2 on the year.
BU got off to a fast start and never looked back, as McLeod converted a penalty stroke in the sixth minute and then assisted on Gaumond's first tally moments later.
Some impressive stickhandling in the circle by Gaumond in the 22nd minute led to her second goal and gave the Terriers a 3-0 advantage.
Hatch, who transferred to BU over the summer, notched her first goal as a Terrier when she stuffed in a rebound at the top of the cage in the 28th minute. Just two minutes later, Hatch chipped a loose ball over the goalkeeper to make it a 5-0 contest.
BU outshot Bucknell, 20-4, but the Bison held a 7-3 advantage in corners.
Junior goalkeeper Jess Maroney played the first half to earn her first career victory. Senior Julie Collins came in the half and made one save before freshman Valentina Cerda played the final 14:08 in her collegiate debut. Gaumond added a defensive save in the second half.
After allowing the Bison to earn a pair of penalty corners and record the game's first shot, the Terriers took complete control of the game, reeling off 16 straight shots while finding the back of the cage on five of them.
Gaumond drew a foul on Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah Zargarpour to give BU its early penalty stroke. McLeod calmly converted the try with a ball to the left corner, just above the boards, at the 5:17 mark.
Just over a minute later, McLeod sent a pass from just outside the top of the circle to Gaumond, who turned a fired a shot past Zargarpour at 6:42.
On her second goal, Gaumond gathered a loose ball following a tipped pass and then eluded a pair of defenders with a fancy stick move before knocking the ball to the netting exactly 21 minutes into the game.
Hatch continued the first-half scoring barrage just over six minutes later. Sophomore Ysi Schieb sent in an entry ball from the right side of the field and senior Andrea Greene's redirect attempt was blocked by Zargarpour. The ball bounced around the goalmouth before Hatch punched it in.
The fifth and final goal came with 5:16 left in the opening half as Hatch jumped on a ball that bounced off a defender in the circle and elevated a shot to the top of the net.
Neither team got on the board in the second half, as the Terriers secured the shutout victory and evened their record on the young season.
After Zargarpour made nine saves in the first half, she was relieved by Erica Perrine, who stopped all five BU shots she faced in the second half.
The Terriers will return to action on Friday (Sept. 2) for their home opener against Providence. Game time at Jordan Field is set for 6 p.m.
