BOSTON - The Boston University softball team picked up a pair of victories over Binghamton in the Terriers' first America East games of the season on Saturday afternoon at the BU Softball Field. BU staged a come-from-behind 4-3 victory in the first game then overcame a late Bearcats' rally to take a 5-4 victory in the second affair of the afternoon.
The Terriers extended their winning streak to seven straight games and have now won eight of their last nine contests. BU improved its record to 18-8 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Terriers posted three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to overcome their 3-1 deficit and take the victory. BU used two home runs in the frame, as sophomore Amy Ekart leadoff with her team-leading fifth homer of the season down the left field line and classmate Brittany Clendenny hit her first home run of the season to right field. Fellow sophomore Chelsea O'Connor drove in the winning run with a single to shortstop.
Sophomore Holli Floetker pitched the complete game en route to earning her 12th win of the season. Floetker allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out eight batters.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Bearcats posted two runs as Jessica Phillips knocked in a run with a single to center field and Jessica Bump scored on a passed ball. BU added its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Volpano doubled to left field and advanced to third base on a wild pitch allowing junior Emily Roesch to drive Volpano home with a sacrifice fly. Neither team added to the scoreboard in the fifth inning but Binghamton tacked on its third run in the top of the sixth as Phillips led off with a homer.
Down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, BU rallied to a victory with homers from Ekart and Clendenny and O'Connor's RBI to take the 4-3 win.
The teams began the second game scoreless through the first inning and the half before the Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the season. Roesch and Clendenny got on base via a single and walk, respectively, before rookie Mandy Fernandez hit her second three-run homer of the season to put the Terriers on top, 3-0.
Binghamton added runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to cut into the Terriers' lead before BU took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Volpano and Roesch got on base with singles and Clendenny drove Volpano in with a single to center field, give BU a two-run advantage heading into the final inning.
The Bearcats responded in the top of the seventh, with the first two batters reaching on a fielding error and a double to right center. After Lisa Cutrona struck out, Caitlyn Friis drove in a run by reaching base on an error. Meghan Tucker then lined out to right field but batted in the tying run to knot the score at 4-4.
For the second time Saturday afternoon, BU made the most of its last at-bat. Rookie Emily Felbaum pinch hit for Melanie Delgado and got on base by a fielding error. Then, Casacci reached on a single, advancing Felbaum to second. Jayme Mask stepped up and got on base with a bunt, allowing the runners to advance and Felbuam to score on a throwing error by the first baseman for BU to capture the 5-4 victory.
Junior Whitney Tuthill earned the win for the second game, improving her record to 4-3 on the season. Tuthill pitched all seven innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out six batters.
BU and Binghamton will complete the three-game series on Sunday, March 25. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the BU Softball Field.
