AMHERST, Mass. - The Boston University softball team had its 10 game winning streak snapped Wednesday night when the Terriers were edged by Massachusetts, 1-0. UMass outlasted BU in the pitcher’s duel with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning as BU’s record moves to 34-14 (12-3 America East) on the season.
Junior Whitney Tuthill was on the mound for the Terriers, as she saw her record go to 12-5 with the loss. She allowed one run and five hits while fanning three batters. She opposed UMass ace Sara Plourde, the national leader in strikeouts. Plourde allowed the Terriers just three hits while striking out 13 batters.
Junior Emily Roesch led BU with a double while sophomore Jayme Mask and senior Erica Casacci accounted for the Terriers other hits.
UMass threatened to score early, as the Minutewomen were in a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the first. Quianna Diaz-Patterson doubled down the left field line and then advanced to third when Katie Bettencourt flied out to right field. Tiffany Meeks and Kyllie Magill loaded the bases with back-to-back walks but Tuthill got Plourde to strike out looking to end the inning.
BU got its first hit of the game in the top of the third with Mask swinging for a two-out single but Casacci went down looking to end the top half of the third. The Terriers then got three quick outs when UMass was at bat to keep the game scoreless through three innings.
The Terriers had an opportunity to put a run on the board in the top of the sixth with Casacci reaching on a single to left center. Sophomore Brittany Clendenny walked to put runners on first and second with two outs but Chelsea O’Connor fouled out to third base to end BU’s at-bat.
In the top of the seventh Roesch doubled to left field in attempt to start some offensive momentum for BU. She advanced to third on a wild pitch then senior Melanie Delgado got on the other corner with a walk but Plourde caught rookie Emily Felbaum swinging to end the inning.
The Minutewomen prevented the game from to extra innings in the bottom of the seventh when Lindsey Webster doubled down the left field line to get a runner on base. She advanced to third on a wild pitch then crossed home on an RBI single from Christine Della Vecchi to give UMass the 1-0 victory.
The Terriers close out the regular season with a three game series at UMBC this weekend. BU faces the Retrievers for a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5, at 1 p.m. before concluding with a single game on Sunday, May 6, at 12 p.m.
