After a record breaking season that included an America East championship and trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament, the Boston University women’s soccer team claimed the top spot in this year’s Terrier Twelve.
Compiling one of the best seasons in program history, the Terriers concluded the 2011 campaign with the most wins in their 17-year history with a final mark of 19-3-1. After starting the season with a tie against then No. 4 Boston College, BU rattled off five consecutive victories, including wins over Washington and then No. 8 Portland to claim the Husky Nike Classic. BU then endured a pair of setbacks before embarking on the longest winning streak in program history with 14 straight victories, including a sweep of America East opponents for the second straight season.
After claiming their ninth America East championship, the Terriers made program history when they hosted their first-ever NCAA postseason game in the first round of the tournament. BU welcomed Harvard to Nickerson Field and dispatched the Crimson, 3-0, to advance to the second round of the NCAAs for just the third time in program history. BU traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face No. 7 Wake Forest, where the Terriers were eliminated, 2-0. The Terriers ended the season ranked No. 17 in the NSCAA poll.
One year after setting the program record for most goals in a season with 53 in 2010, BU posted a new mark of 54 goals in the 2011 season. The Terriers also allowed just 13 goals, the lowest total in their 17-year history.
BU’s success on the field translated to numerous accolades bestowed upon the Terriers. As a team, BU was the recipient of the 2011-12 America East Sportsmanship Award for playing 23 games during the 2011 season without receiving any disciplinary cards, yellow or red. BU was the lone Division I program and one of just 13 men’s and women’s programs total nationwide to receive the NSCAA Gold Certificate for zero cards.
For the first time in program history, the Terriers had two players earn NSCAA All-America honors in the same season, as seniors Lina Cords and Jessica Luscinski were both named to the third team. The duo was joined by three other Terriers, seniors Brittany Heist and Katherine Donnelly and sophomore Kylie Strom, on the NSCAA All-Region teams. The Terriers led the region with the most award recipients.
BU also received several academic accolades from the NSCAA, as Cords and Luscinski were named First Team Scholar All-Americans while the team received the NSCAA Team Academic Award for having a minimum average GPA of 3.0.
The Terriers earned four of the America East major postseason awards with Luscinski leading the way with her second consecutive America East Striker of the Year award. Cords was named Defender of the Year while Heist Earned Midfielder of the Year honors. They were joined on the All-Conference First Team by Strom and Donnelly. Senior goalkepper Alice Binns and classmate Tiya Gallegos earned second team honors while Rookie of the Year Taylor Krebs was accompanied on the All-Rookie Team by Jamie Turchi and Ariana Aston.
The players were not the only ones reaching milestones last season as Feldman became just the 12th NCAA head coach with at least 10 years at the Division I level to reach the 300-win milestone with BU’s 3-0 victory over Loyola on Aug. 27.
