PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Boston University men's tennis team opened its season this past weekend at the three-day Brown Invitational with five Terriers picking up two singles victories each.
In total, BU posted a 12-9 record in singles action with all seven men picking up at least one win against competitors from a group of schools including host Brown, Bryant, Colgate, Marist and UConn.
Sophomore Emilio Teran (Red), senior Josh Friedman (Blue) and senior Alex Hallenbeck (Maroon) all rebounded from first round losses with back-to-back victories to claim the consolation title in their respective flights.
Facing Bryant's 2011 NEC Rookie of the Year Dana Parziale, Teran won a tough first-set tiebreaker before pulling away in a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory.
Freshman Stefan Lemire had an impressive victory in his first match as a Terrier. He lost a first set tiebreaker but rallied back in a three-set thriller (6-7, 6-4, 6-4) to stun Brown's Soufiane Azargui, a 2012 All-Ivy Second Team honoree. Trying to pull out another rally in the Orange Flight semifinals, Lemire fell to Colgate's Mark Pronchick, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4.
Freshman Brandon Phan advanced to the finals of the Maroon Flight by dropping a combined six games in victories over Bryant and Colgate. He finished runner-up though after dropping a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Bryant's Vidith Huot.
His new teammate Eric Miller also had success in the Purple Flight, as he picked up straight-set wins against Marist and Merrimack to reach the finals. Marist's Matteo Giudici denied him though a third victory by defeating the Terrier, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles action, all four BU duos went 1-2 with victories against UConn, Colgate and Bryant (twice).
The Terriers will return to action at the UConn Invitational on Sept. 28-30.
