PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Anthony Ciccone scored his first goal of the season and sophomore Nick Thomson recorded five saves to help the Boston University men's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw at Providence on Friday afternoon. After 110 minutes of action, both teams move to 1-3-1 on the season.

Facing their fifth straight opponent to be coming off an appearance in the second round of the 2011 NCAA tournament, the Terriers got on the board first at 5:27 when Ciccone curled a strike from 18 yards out to the upper right corner of the net.

The Terriers came close to adding a second score in the 37th minute when sophomore Sanford Spivey's shot during a scramble inside the box nailed the post. They took a 1-0 lead into halftime with a 6-4 advantage in shot attempts and 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Neither team seriously threatened early in the second half until the Friars tried to grab the momentum in the 64th and 65th minutes. Thomson stopped a point blank shot from Keith Jecewiz and came back with another strong save seconds later against Marcos Urgarte.

BU though could not move the ball past the midfield during the Friars' continued attack, and Providence took advantage with Wilder Arboleda heading in a goal off a cross from Rishi Desai.

Junior Derek McCaffrey recorded BU's final shot attempt of regulation at 72:37, as the Friars looked to steal the victory. Despite missing 2011 America East Defender of the Year Kelvin Madzongwe due to injury, the Terriers' defense stood strong to head to overtime for the first time this season.

Providence entered the extra session with a double overtime victory and defeat. The Friars had four corner kicks in the first overtime against BU but managed only one shot attempt that went well wide at 97:41.

In the second overtime, both teams recorded one shot attempt with sophomore Dominique Badji nearly finding the net at 108:47 when he flicked the ball over the goalie just wide.

The Friars finished the game with a 14-12 lead in shot attempts and 8-6 advantage in corner kicks. Thomson had five saves for the Terriers, while Keasel Broome posted three for Providence.

After facing their second Big East opponent of the season, the Terriers will conclude their six-game road trip at No. 3 Connecticut on Sunday (Sept. 9), with action set to begin at 7 p.m.
