BOSTON - After playing 26 games on the road, the Boston University softball team is set to host Connecticut in its first home game of the 2013 season on Wednesday at the BU Softball Field with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
Entering a two-game homestand with crosstown rival Boston College visiting on Thursday (April 4), the Terriers (9-16-1) went 2-2-1 last week, highlighted by a 2-0 win at Providence and 3-2 victory at Binghamton.
Junior Megan Volpano batted .353 with a team-high six hits, including a two-run blast that propelled the Terriers to a come-from-behind 9-9 tie at Providence. She is currently second on the team in hitting at .304 with junior Jayme Mask in the top spot at .333. As a team, BU is hitting .241 and is 26-of-27 in stolen base attempts.
Three other Terriers had at least three hits last week with senior Emily Roesch driving in a team-high five runners. She is second on the squad in RBIs at 11, one behind junior Amy Ekart. Recording her first career triple at Providence, Ekart has a team-high two home runs alongside Volpano. Freshman Lauren Hynes leads BU in doubles with six, one ahead of junior Brittany Clendenny.
In the circle last week, senior Whitney Tuthill (7-9) pitched 23.1 innings over four appearances and only allowed two runs through the first 21.1 innings before Binghamton tallied five in the fourth and fifth innings combined on Sunday afternoon during poor weather conditions. A 2012 America East All-Conference Second Team honoree, she ranks second in the league in strikeouts with 79 and ranks fourth with a 2.50 ERA.
Sitting at 13-13, UConn went 2-3 last week with a 6-1 win at Quinnipiac and a 4-0 victory at Rutgers before dropping two straight to the Scarlet Knights by a combined score of 16-2. The Huskies are batting .267 and are led by Kim Silva, who is hitting .364. Audrey Grinnell owns a team-high four homers, while Marissa Guches has 16 RBIs.
Kiki Saveriano is 10-4 this season and has struck out 74 hitters in 98.1 innings. Owning a 1.71 ERA, she has recorded three shutouts this year. Katelyn Callahan (0-1, 3.50 ERA) and Alyson Ambler (2-4, 5.20) have one save each for the Huskies.
Boston College (9-17) went 2-3 last week as well with a 4-3 win at Bryant and 3-2 victory at Virginia. The Eagles fell at UMass, 8-7, and dropped two games to the Cavaliers by a combined score of 7-3.
Tory Speer leads BC in hitting at .390 with nine homers and 20 RBIs. Alana Dimaso is batting .304 with five homers and 15 RBIs. Chelsea Dimon (7-7, 5.79 ERA) has started 11 games and has recorded 30 strikeouts in 61.2 innings. Andrea Filler (2-8) has also started 11 games and has a 7.19 ERA.
Following the two-game homestand, the Terriers will continue the America East schedule at Hartford with a three-game series starting on Saturday (April 6) at 1 p.m.
