ALLSTON, Mass. - Held to three hits through the first five innings by freshman Lauren Hynes, Harvard recorded back-to-back doubles and took advantage of a defensive miscue in the sixth to defeat the Boston University softball team, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Soldiers Field.
Losing their seventh one-run decision of the season, the Terriers drop to 11-20-1, while the defending Ivy League champion Crimson improves to 12-17.
Making her seventh start of the season, Hynes (1-4) scattered five hits through six innings and tallied five strikeouts against two walks. At the plate, she also recorded one hit and her first two career stolen bases. Junior Jayme Mask scored BU's lone run in the sixth after a single, stolen base and Hynes' grounder to second.
Harvard's Morgan Groom went four innings before Jamie Halula (5-4) pitched the final three. They allowed a combined five hits while picking up three strikeouts and one walk.
Haley Davis led the Crimson with two hits, including the sixth-inning RBI double that tied the game at 1-1. She would later score from third on an error, when the Terriers tried to run down Harvard's Katherine Appelbe at first during a stolen base attempt and misfired on the throw.
The Terriers had an opportunity to tie the game in the seventh when junior Chelsea Kehr led off with a single. Pinch runner Kendra Meadows moved to second on a stolen bases with zero outs, but Harvard prevented BU from extending the game with a strike out, infield pop up and throw out at third on a stolen base attempt.
BU will next conclude its five game-road trip with a visit to defending Atlantic 10 champion Massachusetts on Thursday (April 11) at 5 p.m.
