WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Boston University women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 69-44 loss at American on Wednesday night in Bender Arena. The Terriers drop to 11-17 (6-9 Patriot League) with the loss while American improves to 19-7 (12-3 PL).
Senior Rashidat Agboola scored in double-figures for the sixth straight game and led the team with 12 points while adding six rebounds. Classmate Melissa Gallo also scored 12 points and pulled down four rebounds. Sophomore Clodagh Scannell finished with nine points and five boards
Arron Zimmerman led American with 12 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double while Jen Dumiak, Michelle Holmes and Alexis Dobbs each finished with nine points. The Eagles received scoring contributions from 10 different players
After shooting 25.9 percent in the first half, BU converted 41.7 percent of its field goals in the second half to finish with a 33.3 percent clip (17of-51) for the game. The Terriers shot 18.2 percent (4-of-22) from the 3-point line and went 6-of-12 from the free throw stripe. American shot 41.4 percent for the game (25-of-58) and 44.0 percent (11-of-25) from beyond the arc. The Eagles were 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.
American held a 42-31 edge on the boards while both teams scored 10 points off of turnovers.
With the game tied at 8-8 just over five minutes in, the Eagles used a 13-3 run to take 21-11 lead following a trey from Sarah Kiely with eight minutes on the clock. Gallo responded with a triple of her own and a jumper from Agboola brought BU within nine, 25-16, with just under four minutes to go in the half. The Terriers only scored one point in the remaining minutes of the opening period off a free throw from Gallo to head into the locker room facing a 33-17 deficit.
American opened the second half with a 16-5 run over the first eight minutes to grab a 49-22 lead. Facing its largest deficit of the game, 51-22, Scannell hit a trey for the Terriers and junior Mollie McKendrick followed with a jumper for a quick 5-0 spurt for BU as the teams headed to the under 12 media timeout.
Dumiak sank a triple out of the break but the Terriers used a 7-0 streak, including five points from Gallo, to make it a 20-point deficit, 54-34, with 6:53 to play. The Eagles' pushed their advantage out to 62-36 with 4:25 on the clock before a pair of free throws from Gallo. Freshman Sarah Hope scored her only points of the night with a shot from beyond the arc in the final three minutes while classmate Meghan Green added a layup.
The Terriers will play their final road game of the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 22) when BU travels to Lewisburg, Pa., to face Bucknell. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
