PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior
Jamie Turchi scored in the 89th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Boston University women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Providence on Thursday night at Ray Treacy Track.
Turchi’s goal came off a corner kick from classmate Ana Cuffia, who also scored the opening goal in the 54th minute to give BU (4-1-0) an early 1-0 lead. Cuffia’s three-point night marks a career high; she previously dished out two assists as a freshman in 2011.
The Terrier back line was terrific, allowing one shot on target in the run of play for the second straight contest. Senior Alyssa Parisi saved that lone shot and improved to 2-1-0 on the season. Her one blemish came when Providence (1-2-1) converted from the penalty spot in the 64th minute to tie the game.
Both teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half despite a combined seven corners. The Terriers were the only side to record a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, but Turchi’s strike was saved by Kristyn Shea.
Cuffia notched her second goal of the season shortly after taking one of the Terriers’ six second-half corners. She eventually got to the ball on the right wing and slotted a shot past Shea on the far side. Following the goal, sophomore Erica Kosienski forced Shea into a save before BU defended two corners with about 10 minutes to play.
The game appeared destined for extra time until Turchi’s heroics salvaged a full share of the spoils for the Terriers. Cuffia launched a corner kick and Turchi knocked it past Shea from three yards out. Parisi made a save in the final minute and the Friars were unable to capitalize on a corner kick with three seconds remaining in regulation to preserve the scoreline.
BU will return home on Sunday when the Terriers welcome San Francisco to Nickerson Field. Opening kick is set for 12 p.m.
