BOSTON - Highlighted by sophomore Cedric Hankerson's game-high 20 points and junior Nathan Dieudonne's 11 rebounds, the Boston University men's basketball team finished on a 12-2 run in the final 100 seconds to claim a 73-60 victory over Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Agganis Arena.
Entering the contest in a four-way tie for fourth with the Greyhounds (10-15, 6-8 PL), the Terriers (11-14, 7-7 PL) shot 55 percent from the field in the second half and held Loyola to 24.1 percent to avenge an earlier 91-86 overtime defeat. In that loss, BU shot 13-of-31 (.419) during regulation from the free throw line, but in the second go-round, the Terriers wiped away the memories of that feeling of helplessness, going 23-of-32 (.719), including a critical 10-of-12 down the stretch at the charity stripe.
Hankerson himself went 10-of-12 and added two 3-pointers to reach 20 points for the eighth time this season while contributing a game-high five assists with six rebounds. Sophomore Eric Fanning tallied 15 points off the bench, while junior John Papale and freshman Cheddi Mosely posted 12 points apiece. Dieudonne's efforts helped BU hand the Patriot League leader in rebounds its worst deficit of the season at -14 (42-28). He also added three steals to help BU finish tied in points off turnovers, 17-17, despite committing four more miscues than Loyola.
Andre Walker tallied a team-high six rebounds and 13 points but needed 16 attempts to reach the scoring mark. Chancellor Barnard and Franz Rassman added 10 points apiece, while Tyler Hubbard posted 11 points. Cam Gregory contributed eight points and six rebounds, as Loyola finished the contest 21-of-58 (.362), including 6-of-21 (.286) from behind the arc.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with the contest featuring five ties and eight lead changes in the first 20 minutes of action. Neither team led by more than three until Papale drained a 3-pointer for the 28-24 advantage at 8:32.
Junior Justin Alston's free throw five minutes later kept the lead at four (32-28) with 3:10 remaining, but Loyola hit a pair of layups in the final 1:24 to enter the locker room tied, 32-32. Shooting 48.3 percent in the first half, the Greyhounds opened the second with another layup to grab its final lead of the game.
The Terriers' Alston and Hankerson responded with a combined seven points over a two-minute stretch to take the lead for good. Denzel Brito cut the deficit to one (39-38) at 16:21, but sophomore Blaise Mbargorba followed with a dunk on a feed from Mosely to ignite a 12-0 run.
Hankerson drained a 3-pointer and added a free throw after the foul at 12:34. The Terriers then forced a Loyola turnover, which led to Mosely's trey and a 51-38 lead with 11:38 remaining. Mosely contributed his fourth bomb at 8:42 to keep the lead at 13 (56-43).
The Greyhounds tried to mount a rally on a 12-2 run during the next six minutes. Barnard's layup pulled Loyola within 58-55 at 2:46, and Walker's 3-pointer in response to Hankerson's trey put the score at 61-58 with 1:46 left in regulation.
On the ensuing possession, Hankerson drew a foul and hit both free throws. He then swiped the ball away from Brito and converted on two free throws for a 65-58 lead. Loyola missed its next five 3-point attempts, allowing BU to pull away for the victory and 4-3 lead in the all-time series.
The Terriers finished the contest 21-of-45 (.467), including 8-of-19 (.421) from behind the arc, while Loyola went 21-of-58 (.362) and 6-of-21 (.286), respectively. They outscored the Greyhounds in the paint, 24-22, and in second-chance opportunities, 14-8.
BU will next hit the road for the final time this season, starting with a trip to American on Wednesday (Feb. 18). The CBS Sports Network broadcast is set to begin at 7 p.m.
