The Boston University women's soccer team held its annual end of the season awards banquet on Monday night to celebrate a successful 2014 season. Head coach Nancy Feldman distributed nine awards for performances on and off the pitch.
The Team Academic Award was presented to junior Lauren MacLellan for her outstanding achievements in the classroom. Sporting a 3.8 GPA in Sargent College, MacLellan led the women's soccer team, which posted a 3.25 GPA last semester and landed 19 student-athletes on the BU Athletic Department Honor Roll. MacLellan was also one of 14 Terriers to earn a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
The Alumni Association Most Improved Player Award, presented by Deidre Woolley '87, the co-President of the BU Women's Soccer Alumni Association, was given to sophomore Alexandra Cooper. Cooper played all but one game coming off the bench this season. She was an asset in the midfield, helping the Terriers hold opponents to under one goal per game in 2014.
Freshman Alivya Wimmer, who started the final 16 games of the season at centerback, received the Rookie of the Year Award. She was a crucial part of one of the best defenses in the Patriot League this season and was the only underclassman on the starting defensive line, which was made up of seniors Kai Miller and Ariana Aston and junior MacLellan.
Senior Jamie Turchi was recognized for her extra efforts in the weight room and was presented with the Strength and Conditioning Award by strength coaches Jill Zeller and Will Turner.
The team also presented an award to a special supporter of BU women's soccer. The Jean Kelleher Award, presented annually in memory of dear parent liaison and mother of former player Shauna Kelleher.
This year's award was given to Gary and Judy Miller, the directors of Camp Merriwood, a summer camp in Orford, N.H. where the team spend some of its preseason camp for the last eight years. The Millers opened their wonderful facility to the program have become great supporters of BU women's soccer.
The Terrier Award, given to the most valuable team member, was presented to graduating student manager Emily Ficke, who has spent the last 2.5 years with the team. Throughout her time she contributed as a statistician, practice management assistant, event and meal coordinator and overall support system for both the players and coaches.
Sophomore goalkeeper Bridget Conway was the recipient of this year's Community and Leadership Award. Conway coordinated much of the team's volunteerism this season including the team's involvement in the Making Strides for Breast Cancer Event. The Terriers completed 375 hours of community service this past fall and Conway led the team with 17 hours during the 2014 season. She also serves as the team's SAAC representative.
Two MVP awards are given annually, one for offense and one for defense. This year's Most Valuable Offensive Player Award was given to junior Jenna Fisher. Fisher led the team with 17 points including a team-high seven goals. She started at forward in every game last season and was clutch during Patriot League play, scoring a team-leading two game-winning goals against conference opponents.
Senior Kai Miller was named this year's Most Valuable Defensive Player. The leader of one of the top defensive lines in the conference, Miller helped the Terriers hold opponents to 0.7 goals per game and allowed just five total goals during conference play.
