PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Sam Talkow was an impressive 13-of-15 at the faceoff X and four different Terriers found the back of the net, but the Boston University men's lacrosse team suffered a 7-4 setback at Providence on Wednesday afternoon.
BU (2-2) held a 3-1 lead at halftime but Providence (2-1) scored six times in the second half to secure the victory. It was the second straight time an opposing goalie stole the game, as Peter Badgley made 18 saves for the Friars.
Freshmen Greg Farris, Hayden Ruiz and Jack Wilson each scored while Wilson also added an assist. Sophomore Ryan Johnston recorded his first goal of the season and freshman Ryan Hilburn collected his team-leading ninth assist of the season.
Sophomore Christian Carson-Banister made 11 saves, including seven in the first half, in addition to matching a career high with four ground balls. BU gathered 29 ground balls as a team and caused 13 of the Friars' 20 turnovers, with sophomore Dominick Calisto forcing four giveaways to lead the Terriers.
Greg Woznkiak and Cam Pincus were solid on the defensive end, each causing two turnovers and combining for seven ground balls, six of which were collected by Wozniak. Talkow led the way with seven ground balls.
Farris opened the scoring for BU just 2:23 into the proceedings and it was the only goal of the game until Will Mazzone evened the score 57 seconds into the second quarter. The Terriers scored twice in a 41-second span to earn their largest lead of the game at 3-1, when Ruiz and Johnston tallied. Johnston's goal was the lone man-up goal of the contest for either team.
PC potted the first three goals of the second half, including two in the third quarter, to take a 4-3 lead with 14:12 to play. Wilson tied the game with 13:38 left but Nick Preston tallied twice to give the Friars a 5-4 lead. Two more goals sealed the result for Providene.
The Terriers continue their road swing on Saturday when they travel to Vermont for a non-conference clash. Opening faceoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
