BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sophomore Cal Dearth and freshman Jack Wilson each tallied a program-record seven points to help lead the Boston University men's lacrosse team to a 15-7 road victory against Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Virtue Field.
The duo was responsible for setting two more BU single-game records, as Wilson tallied six goals and Dearth was credited with five assists to help the Terriers improve to 3-2 and surpass last season's win total.
BU erased three one-goal deficits in the early stages of the contest before scoring the final six goals of the first half and never looking back.
Seven other Terriers scored one goal and sophomore goalkeeper Christian Carson-Banister made a season-high 14 saves and also recorded his first collegiate assistto earn the win. Freshman Tommy Connelly played the final 2:59 in goal and saved one of the two shots he faced.
A total of five Terriers had multi-point afternoons, with freshman Ryan Hilburn and sophomores Ryan Johnston and Adam Schaal notchinga goal and an assist apiece. Sophomore Allen Winkoff scored his first goal as a Terrier while freshman Greg Farris, sophomore Sam Talkow and freshman Hayden Ruiz also found the back of the net. Talkow was also 9-of-18 at the faceoff X and collected four ground balls.
Sophomore Pat Myers made his 2015 debut after missing the last 12 games dating back to last year due to injury. He was one of eight Terriers to have an assist, joining Carson-Banister and sophomore Jack Beall as players with a lone helper.
BU outshot Vermont, 42-39, and held a 29-27 edge in ground balls. Each team had five failed clears and the Terriers held a large advantage in turnovers, committing only 11 while the Catamounts had 21. The Terriers caused six of those 21 turnovers, with sophomore Cam Pincus leading the way with three in addition to his four ground balls. Hilburn and sophomores Henry Lee and Jake Dansey each gathered three ground balls; Lee's trio of ground ballsis a career high.
It was a 2-2 tilt after 15 minutes and Vermont held a 3-2 lead with 10:30 remaining in the first half before BU rattled off six straight goals. Johnston started the offensive onslaught with a man-up goal before Dearth, Wilson, Hilburn and Schaal all scored in a span of 4:09to give BU a 7-3 lead. Wilson concluded the half with his second of the game to put the Terriers ahead by an 8-3 score at halftime.
UVM scored 1:40 into the third quarter to cut its deficit to 9-4, but the Terriers tallied the final four goals of the quarter to take a 12-4 lead into the final 15 minutes. Winkoff's marker came at the buzzer, with Wilson, Ruiz and Dearth also scoring. Vermont cut the lead to 12-6 with the first two goals of the fourth quarter, but Wilson completed his record day with back-to-back-to-back goals to make it a 15-6 score with 2:59 remaining. The Catamounts collected one final marker before time expired.
The Terriers will return to Patriot League play on March 7 when they travel to Colgate. Opening draw is set for 2 p.m.
