HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Boston University men's lacrosse team earned its first-ever victory over a ranked opponent when the Terriers knocked off No. 18 Colgate, 18-11, on Saturday afternoon at Tyler's Field.
The Terriers improved to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 thanks to their highest offensive output since they defeated Mercer, 18-6, on Feb. 7. Sophomore Adam Schaal scored a career-best five times in the first half and freshman Ryan Hilburn notched a career-high four markers to help hand Colgate (4-1) its first blemish of the season.
Sophomore Sam Talkow set a career high with 26 faceoff wins in 33 attempts as he dominated Colgate at the faceoff X. He was also one of eight different Terriers to find the back of the net. Freshman Jack Wilson had a five-point day with three goals and two assists; he has 12 points (9g, 3a) in his last two games. Sophomore Cal Dearth netted three points (2g, 1a) while Talkow, freshman Hayden Ruiz and sophomore Jack Beall each had a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Greg Wozniak collected his second goal of the season while classmates Pat Myers and Craig Zebrowski each collected a helper. Christian Carson-Banister made seven saves as the sophomore goalkeeper improved to 4-2.
The Terriers led the Raiders, 8-7, at halftime but outscored Colgate, 10-4, in the final 30 minutes. Schaal scored the team's first five goals of the game, including three straight to bring BU back from a 2-0 deficit and into a 3-2 lead. BU gained a 5-3 lead early in the second quarter after Schaal scored a man-down marker, but Colgate rattled off three straight of its own to take a 6-5 lead.
Wozniak and Wilson each tallied in a span of six seconds to regain the lead for BU, but the Raiders scored late in the quarter to tie the game at 7-7. It appeared as if that was going to be the halftime score, but Dearth found the back of the net with 25 seconds left to make it an 8-7 game at the break.
The teams traded goals to start the third quarter and it was a 9-9 game before Wilson and Hilburn combined to pull the Terriers ahead for good. After Wilson scored with 6:02 left to take a 10-9 lead, he and Hilburn scored seven seconds apart to lift the Terriers to a 12-9 lead. Anthony Abbadessa made it 12-10 to start the fourth quarter, but that was as close as Colgate got for the remainder of the contest.
Ruiz and Talkow tallied just six seconds apart to give BU a 14-10 advantage. Matt Clarkson found the back of the net for the final time with 10:36 to play, but it was all Terriers after that. Hilburn scored twice and Beall collected his goal and assist as part of a four-goal run to close the game.
BU will return home next Saturday (March 14) to host Lafayette, a team the Terriers defeated last season. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
