BOSTON - A late comeback attempt came up just short for the No. 20 Boston University field hockey team on Sunday evening, as the Terriers dropped a 2-1 contest to No. 18 Massachusetts in the final game of the inaugural Tri-Conference Cup at New Balance Field.

BU allowed two early goals but did not allow a shot after halftime. The Terriers controlled the play for the vast majority of the second half and finally were rewarded when junior Bea Baumberger Altirriba fired a shot to the boards off a corner in the 63rd minute.

The home team threatened on a couple more occasions, including a last-second effort by junior Taylor Blood that nearly resulted a corner, but the Minutewomen held on.

All three teams (BU, UMass, UNH) finished the Tri-Conference Cup with a 1-1 record and an even goal differential.

Nicole Kuerzi opened the scoring in the seventh minute on UMass' first shot of the night when she tipped in a shot from just outside the goalmouth. Less than five minutes later, the Minutewomen drew a penalty stroke off a foul on a rush. Melanie Kreusch converted the try to put the visitors up 2-0 at the 11:03 mark.

Each team recorded six shots in the opening half, but it was all BU in the latter half. The Terriers held a 13-6 shot advantage for the game and drew eight corners while allowing only two.

On BU's final corner of the evening, senior co-captain executed a direct insert to Baumberger Altirriba, who drilled the ball past UMass netminder Sam Carlino with 7:03 left in regulation. It was her second career goal.

The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 5) when they head north to Maine to take on Hofstra in a neutral-site contest at 3 p.m. BU will take on the host Black Bears on Monday (Sept. 7) at 3 p.m.
