SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Boston University women's cross country team opened its 2015 season at the Nassaney Invitational hosted by Bryant University on Saturday morning.
BU took third in the 12-team field, scoring 92 points. Providence won the event with 15 points, followed by Sacred Heart in second place with 75 points.
Five Terriers finished in the top 30, led by junior Hallie Armstrong in 12th place. She crossed the finish line in a time of 18:14. Right behind her was freshman Courtney Breiner, who impressed on her collegiate debut with a 14th-place performance (18:16).
Two other rookie harriers turned in strong opening races, as Cara Moyer (18:32) finished 18th and Jamie Grossman (19:03) was 28th. Senior Shelby Stableford (18:45) began her final collegiate campaign with 21st-place showing.
Senior Erin Pierce was just outside the top 30, finishing 31st with a time of 19:13. Sophomore Alexia Zawadzke turned in a time of 19:43, followed by freshmen Leora Tofler (19:57) and Elin Wolker (19:58). Junior Colleen Tretheway and freshman Alicia Huerta each finished in 20:00, while freshman Dominique Betterbed (20:07), sophomore Gabrielle DiRenzo (20:14) and freshman Lela Stemple (20:29) also competed.
BU will be back in action on Sept. 25 when the Terriers take part in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown, hosted by Boston College at Franklin Park.
