EASTON, Pa.--The Boston University women's basketball team suffered a 71-56 loss at Lafayette on Saturday afternoon in Kirby Sports Center. The Leopards (3-11, 1-3 PL) earn their first Patriot League victory while the Terriers (0-15, 0-4 PL) are still in search of their first win of the season.
Kara Sheftic led BU in scoring for the second straight game, netting 16 points in a strong inside performance. She also finished the day with three blocks.
Lafayette was led by Jamie O'Hare, who finished with 19 points and reached 1,000 career points during the game. Alex Cantwell finished with 17 points including 14 in the first half and Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points.
The Terriers shot 32.8 percent from the field (20-61) and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (7-21). Lafayette finished with a 42.6 overall shooting percentage (26-61) and went 4-for-13 from long range.
Neither team was able to put together a run throughout most of the first quarter, with back-and-forth scoring until the Leopards went on the attack with 2:25 left in the period. Lafayette scored eight unanswered points to end the quarter and go into the second period with a 20-11 advantage.
The Leopards continued to build their lead over the course of the second quarter, eventually reaching their largest lead of the half, 18 points, with two minutes remaining. A pair of free throws by Corrine Williams cut the Lafayette lead to 40-24 at halftime.
The Terriers kept pace with the Leopards for the remainder of the game but could not cut into the halftime deficit and ultimately conceded to a 71-56 loss.
BU is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 13 when the Terriers return home for a game against American at 7 p.m. in Case Gym.
