Lehigh Edges Men's Soccer, 1-0

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a battle featuring Patriot League's two representatives in last year's NCAA tournament, defending conference champion Lehigh scored the go-ahead goal in the 48th minute and successfully defended against 11 corner kicks to defeat the Boston University men's soccer team, 1-0, on Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lehigh's Will Smith recorded five saves to keep the game scoreless entering the locker room.
  • The Mountain Hawks came out attacking in the second half with three shots in the first two minutes.
  • Shortly thereafter, Doyle Tuvesson received a pass from midfield on the right side and charged past a BU defender into the box before shooting a low grounder at the near post for the 1-0 lead at 47:58.
  • The Terriers had eight corners in the final 45 minutes and a pair of free kick attempts in the last 15 but were unable to find the equalizer. 
GAME NOTES
  • Lehigh snapped the Terriers' three-game unbeaten streak with its second consecutive one-goal win.
  • The Mountain Hawks improved to 2-3-0 all-time against BU following Tuvesson's golden goal last year.
  • Both teams finished with 14 shots apiece with BU recording an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Freshman Matt McDonnell led BU with five shots, including three on goal.
  • Reigning PL Goalkeeper of the Week Matt Gilbert had two saves for the Terriers against Smith's eight.
  • Shut out for just the second time this season, BU fell to 0-4-2 on the road this year.

  • The Terriers will visit the Crusaders in their final road game of the regular season on Wednesday (Oct. 27) at 7 p.m.
