HIGH POINT, N.C. - Junior Christian Carson-Banister made 18 saves and nine different Terriers scored to help lead the Boston University men's lacrosse team to a 13-10 win at High Point on Tuesday at Vert Stadium.
BU is off to its first 3-0 start in program history thanks in part to Carson-Banister's standout performance. Many of his 18 saves were on point-blank chances, including four stops on MLL draft pick Dan Lomas. It's the most saves for Carson-Banister since he stopped 25 shots against Duke on May 4, 2014.
The Terriers scored the first three goals of the game and had a 6-1 lead after the first quarter. High Point (0-2) cut it to 6-4 at halftime before BU rattled off five more goals in the third quarter to make it 11-7. The Terriers held off a late charge by the Panthers in the final stanza, with Carson-Banister making seven of his 18 stops in the fourth quarter.
Freshman Brendan Homire had a career day, picking up his first collegiate goal and adding three assists for four points, all of which are career highs. Homire's final assist was perhaps his best, as he found classmate James Burr for one of Burr's three goals.
Junior Sam Tenney and sophomore Greg Farris each tallied two goals. Juniors Greg Wozniak and Jack Beall each scored their first goal of the season, while sophomores Hayden Ruiz and Jack Wilson also found the back of the net.
Sam Talkow notched his second goal of the season in addition to his strong work at the faceoff X. The junior won 12 of the 20 draws he took and gathered four ground balls. Junior Brian Badgett made his first appearance since the 2014 season and led the Terriers with five ground balls. Beall and junior Dominick Calisto each had three ground balls, with Calisto also causing one turnover.
Talkow dominated the faceoff X in the opening 15 minutes, going 6-of-8 in the quarter and starting the game 3-of-3. Burr, Farris and Talkow all scored to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead just 2:24 into the proceedings.
High Point got a goal back, but Burr, Ruiz and Wilson closed the quarter out on a 3-0 run. The Panthers tallied the next three goals, but BU got off to a great start in the second half. Beall and Homire put the Terriers back up by four at 8-4 just 1:49 into the frame, and the Terriers were up 10-5 in the first 4:40 of the quarter.
The Panthers made it 11-8 early in the fourth quarter, but Farris' second of the game regained a four-goal advantage. BU played stout defense and held High Point scoreless for nearly eight minutes before the Panthers made it 12-9 with 4:36 remaining in regulation. Burr's insurance goal with 2:06 to play put the game out of reach, however, despite a late Panther marker with 31 seconds on the clock.
BU will return home on Saturday when the Terriers host Hartford at Nickerson Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
