Worcester - The Boston University women's basketball team suffered a 74-50 loss to Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon in a Turnpike Trophy battle at the Hart Recreation Center.
Despite a game high 19 points from sophomore Meghan Doogan, the Terriers (3-25, 3-14 PL) could not keep pace with the Crusaders (13-15, 10-7 PL). Holy Cross was led by senior guard Lisa Mifsud, who scored 21 points. Two other Crusaders finished in double-digit scoring, as Mifsud was joined by sophomore Katie Doherty (17 points, 4 assists) and senior Katie Gillespie (14 points).
Despite an excellent first half from Doogan, who had 13 points in the half on 5-6 shooting (3-4 on three pointers), the Terriers went into the locker trailing 37-27.
Holy Cross opened up a 54-37 lead after three, but in the fourth, BU went on a 8-1 run. Capped by a layup from junior Meghan Green, BU cut the Holy Cross lead to 57-46 with 5:49 to go, forcing Holy Cross to call timeout. However, Holy Cross came out of the timeout with a 6-0 run of their own to stretch the lead to 20 with just over 3 minutes to play.
Overall, the Terriers shot 17-for-40 (42.5 percent) from the floor and 5-for-14 from beyond the arc (35.7 percent). The Crusaders went 28-61-(45.9 percent) from the field and 10-for 28 (35.7 percent) from long range. BU had an advantage on the free throw line, going 11-for-17 while Holy Cross shot 8-18.
The Terriers conclude their regular season on Wed., March 2 vs. Army. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. Patriot League playoffs are set to begin March 5th.
