LOWELL, Mass. - The eighth-ranked Boston University men's ice hockey team dropped a 3-2 contest at No. 11 UMass Lowell in the opening game of the Hockey East quarterfinals on Friday evening at Tsongas Center.
Lowell sophomore Michael Louria broke a 1-1 tie with 8:25 left in regulation and senior Adam Chapie's power-play insurance goal minutes later proved to be the game winner.
Freshman Bobo Carpenter redirected in an offering by senior Matt Grzelcyk to get the Terriers within one at 3-2 with 4:15 left in regulation, but the home team held on to secure the win in the opener.
BU (21-11-5) held a 35-19 shot advantage but could not capitalize on the possession disparity. Senior Kevin Boyle turned in a 33-save performance for the River Hawks while the Terriers got 16 saves from senior Sean Maguire.
The River Hawks (22-8-5) earned the win thanks to their power play, scoring on two of four opportunities with the man advantage. BU went 0-for-2 with both chances coming early on. Lowell managed to not take a penalty in the final 47 minutes of the game.
After Lowell recorded three of the first four shots of the contest, BU held the home team without a shot for over 15 minutes. However, the teams headed into the first intermission in a scoreless deadlock.
For the second consecutive game, freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson opened the scoring.
After taking a pass from senior Danny O'Regan, the rookie centerman handled the puck through the left circle before slotting the puck past Boyle at 6:22 of the second period.
The lead was short-lived, however, as exactly a minute later, the River Hawks went on a power play on which they would record an equalizer. Junior Joe Gambardella deposited the puck at the crease at the 8:58 mark following a nice feed from sophomore C.J. Smith.
The fifth-seeded Terriers dominated play at even-strength, especially in the final period. BU had a great chance to regain the lead midway through the third when O'Regan found fellow senior Matt Lane alone in front, but Boyle made a spectacular glove save to keep it a 1-1 game.
Louria's go-ahead goal went off a skate before eluding Maguire. The power-play goal by Chapie came on a well-executed back-door play as Smith picked up his second assist of the night.
The Terriers will look to even the series when the teams return to Tsongas Center on Saturday (March 12) at 7 p.m. for game two.
