WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Despite six Terriers reaching home plate at least once, the Boston University softball came up just short in an 8-7 loss at Army West Point on Sunday afternoon.
Extending their win streak to seven games, the Black Knights (18-11, 3-0 PL) loaded the bases with zero outs in the bottom of the seventh against the Terriers (11-15, 0-3 PL) before claiming the win on a two-RBI walk-off double by Caroline Smith.
Freshman Alex Heinen led BU with a pair of singles and three RBIs, and sophomore Emma Wong had an RBI triple along with two runs scored. BU finished with seven hits, while Army featured four Black Knights with two hits apiece to post 13 total.
PL Preseason Player of the Year Kasey McCravey opened the game with a double to right center and scored on another double. With one out, Army added an RBI single to grab an early 2-0 lead.
After the Terriers scored a run on a defensive error in the second, the Black Knights extended the lead to three (4-1) with a pair of singles and triple in the bottom of the third. BU came back in the fifth by loading the bases and earning back-to-back hits. Heinen delivered a two-RBI single, and sophomore Kaitlin Sahlinger added another hit to plate two more, as Army recorded three errors in the inning.
In a see-saw battle, Army finished with four runs in the final three innings to pull out the win. After being kept off the board in the fourth by sophomore Makinna Akers (1-3) in relief, the Black Knights had a two-out RBI single in each of the following two innings to retake the lead.
The Terriers made one last charge in the seventh. Hynes led off with a double and and scored on Wong's triple to right center. Heinen added an RBI and could have scored on the following Sahlinger at-bat, but Army made a spectacular diving catch in center to pull off the double play and keep the BU lead at just 7-6.
The Black Knights started the bottom half with a walk and loaded the bases on a single and hit-by-pitch. After losing Army's first lead in the fifth, Smith delivered the walk-off double to left center to help Kristen West (11-1) earn the win in relief.
Following their eighth one-run loss of the season, the Terriers will kick off a seven-game homestand against local rival Boston College on Wednesday (March 30) at 4 p.m.
