CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College jumped out early with five unearned runs and added a two-run homer to defeat the Boston University softball team, 7-2, on Thursday afternoon at Shea Field.
Finishing with an 11-5 advantage in hits, the Eagles improve to 21-15, while the Terriers drop to 12-19. Junior Moriah Connolly led the BU offense with a 2-of-3 performance that included an RBI single and run scored.
Senior Lauren Hynes (8-10) pitched a scoreless first and had two outs in the bottom of the second with two runners in scoring position before BC took the lead for good. The Eagles benefited from a pair of Terrier errors and tallied three hits and a walk to pull ahead, 5-0.
BU got on the board in the third when junior Rachel Levine singled, moved to third on classmate Brittany Younan's single and scored on Connolly's single. The Terriers would not get any closer though, as Tatiana Cortez hit her team-leading 11th homer of the season against junior Makinna Akers with a two-run blast in the fourth for the 7-1 lead.
Connolly scored the final run of the game in the sixth by getting a single and taking advantage of a pair of BC miscues. Jessica Dreswick (10-5) and Allyson Frei combined for eight strikeouts against one walk to prevent the Terriers from mounting a rally.
BU will next resume Patriot League action at home against Bucknell with Saturday's doubleheader slated for 12 p.m.
