Terriers to Host UMass in Home Opener Saturday Night

BOSTON – After a two-week break, the Boston University men's soccer team will kick off a two-game homestand against UMass on Saturday night with action slated to begin at 7 p.m. The Terriers (0-1-0) are slated to host a combined nine regular season games this year, starting with the Minutemen (0-3-1).

TERRIER TIDBITS

  • BU opened its season with a 3-2 loss at then-No. 8 Boston College back on Aug. 28 ... Besides UMass, the Terriers are also scheduled to face three other in-state foes this season - vs. Northeastern (Sept. 13), at Harvard (Sept. 27) and at Holy Cross (Oct. 26).
  • The Terriers have gone a combined 14-4-3 (.738) at home the last two years after posting a 5-4-0 (.556) mark in 2013.
  • BU was selected to finish second in the Patriot League preseason poll despite receiving the most first-place votes.
  • After combining for 15 goals last season, senior Felix De Bona and junior Anthony Viteri were named to the MAC Hermann Award watch list ... Both men had a goal at Boston College.
  • 2015 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Magnus Benediktsson earned his first-career mutli-assist performance against the Eagles after tallying six helpers last year.
  • The BC game featured the debut of four rookie Terriers - Jerry Ozor, Jasper Verplancke, Matt McDonnell and Satchel Cortet

SCOUTING UMASS

  • The Minutemen have yet to score a goal on the road after suffering a 3-0 loss at then-No. 6 Syracuse and 2-0 defeat at Colgate though did score a goal in each of the last two games.
  • Junior striker Alex DeSantis scored UMass' lone goal in the 2OT draw against St. Peter's and followed up with an assist on sophomore Samuel Asamoah's goal in the 4-1 loss to New Hampshire.
  • Senior Jose Becerra has played every second at net ... He owns a .722 save percentage and 2.37 goals against average.
  • UMass was selected to finish 10th in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll ... Freshman and former New England Revolution youth academy member Andrew Barrowman was named to the A-10 All-Rookie preseason team.
  • Opponents are averaging 21.3 shots per game, while UMass currently sits at 8.5 per game.
  • The Minutemen have compiled nine yellow cards against just three from opponents.

SERIES HISTORY

  • LAST MEETING - Sept. 13, 2015: BU 2, @ UMass 1
    • Viteri scored both Terrier goals (9', '39) with DeSantis tallying UMass' lone goal in the 29th minute.
    • Gilbert finished with five saves for the victory. 
  • UMass leads the all-time series, 21-16-7, dating back to 1952, but BU has won the last three meetings, a feat last accomplished in 1998-2000.
  • The Terriers are unbeaten in the last five meetings (3-0-2) with an 8-4 advantage in goals scored with UMass last winning in 2008 in double overtime, 3-2.
  • Senior David Asbjornsson scored his first career goal off a free kick in the last meeting at Nickerson Field to help BU claim the 2-0 victory.
