WORCESTER, Mass. - The No. 23 Boston University field hockey team scored early and often on Friday night, posting an 8-1 victory at Holy Cross in the annual Turnpike Trophy game to stay perfect in Patriot League play at 4-0.
Senior Kali Shumock tallied a goal and an assist and was named the game's Turnpike Trophy MVP. Junior Ally Hammel and freshman Miya Denison scored two goals apiece. BU improved to 9-5 overall while the Crusaders moved to 5-8 with a 2-2 conference mark.
How it Happened
- The Crusaders cut an early 2-0 BU lead in half with a goal in the 19th minute, but the Terriers responded with six straight tallies to cruise to the victory.
- Junior Kara Enoch opened the scoring at the 6:18 mark with a low shot off a pass from senior Allie Renzi.
- Denison scored the first of her two goals right in front of the cage at 11:33 when she tipped in an offering from fellow freshman Petra Hall.
- Holy Cross's lone goal came off a corner in the 18th minute as Rachel Lapar converted from the top of the circle on assists from Lauren Ineson and Maureen Connolly.
- Senior co-captain Grace Boston made sure that's as close as the Crusaders would get, rocketing a corner shot to the boards for her fifth tally of the season at the 24:13 mark. Junior Bridget Egan picked up an assist on the play.
- Hammel recorded both of her goals in the final three minutes of the opening half.
- The junior found the net off a corner at 32:06 with assists from seniors Jordyn Beesmer and Shumock and then converted a penalty stroke less than two minutes later for her fifth goal of the season.
- Denison kept the BU run going after halftime, capping her two-goal night in the 48th minute.
- Freshman Ailsa Connolly scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season at 64:03 off a pass by sophomore Kiley Gallagher.
- Shumock created the 8-1 final with 1:35 left in regulation when she was found by Hall at the left post after inserting on a corner.
Game Notes
- BU is now on a three-game win streak and has allowed exactly one goal in six of its past seven games.
- The Terriers held a commanding 31-7 shot advantage and forced Holy Cross netminder Marcia LaPlante to make 16 saves.
- BU earned 13 corners and allowed four.
- Freshman Millie Baker (1) and junior Kathleen Keegan (3) combined for four saves in the BU cage and Baker picked up the win to improve to 4-3.
- Shumock is now tied for the lead among Patriot League players in assists this season with eight.
- The Terriers have won their past 19 meetings with the Crusaders.
- BU now holds a 3-0 lead in this year's Turnpike Trophy standings following wins by the men's and women's soccer teams.
