BOSTON - Off to a 2-0 start, the No. 2 Boston University men's ice hockey team welcomes Minnesota State to Agganis Arena on Family & Friends Weekend for the first-ever meetings between the two schools. Friday's opener will begin at 7:30 p.m. while Saturday's contest will start at 7 p.m.
This will be the first time that the Mavericks have ever faced a Beanpot school and it marks their first Hockey East opponent since UMass Lowell in the 2014 NCAA Northeast Regional. The Terriers last faced a WCHA squad on Dec. 29, 2012, at Denver during the Pioneers' final season in the conference. BU and Minnesota State were both at the 2011 Shillelagh Tournament, hosted by Notre Dame, but did not face each other.
Friday marks the middle of the Terriers' five-game non-conference stretch to open the season. The Terriers have started out 3-0 just twice in the past 15 seasons.
Minnesota State opened its season on Saturday with a 4-0 home loss to No. 6/4 St. Cloud State. The Mavericks, who return six of their top seven scorers from last season, were picked first in both the WCHA Preseason Coaches and Media Polls.
Junior defenseman Daniel Brickley and sophomore forward Marc Michaelis shared WCHA Preseason Player of the Year honors and joined senior forward C.J. Suess on the Preseason All-WCHA Team. Freshman Jake Jaremko was named WCHA Preseason Rookie of the Year. Michaelis led last year's team in points with 36 (14g, 22a) while Brickley added 31, including a team-best 23 assists.
In goal, junior Jason Pawloski returns after starting 14 games a season ago and posting a .920 save percentage and a 2.10 goals-against average. The Terriers will see a familiar face this weekend as goaltender Connor LaCouvee has joined the Mavericks as a graduate transfer after getting his undergraduate degree from BU in three years.
BU is coming off a 3-2 overtime road win at then-No. 14 Quinnipiac on Sunday as freshman Shane Bowers poked in his own rebound with 41.1 seconds left in overtime to lift the Terriers to the victory. Sophomore Patrick Harper scored both of BU's goals in regulation, erasing Quinnipiac leads of 1-0 and 2-1, before assisting on Bowers' winner.
For the second straight year, Harper went on to earn the first Hockey East Player of the Week of the season. Through two games, he is tied for the Division I lead in both goals (4) and points (6). Classmate Jake Oettinger is off to a strong start with a 1.45 goals-against average and a .946 save percentage.
The Terriers have allowed the first goal in each of their two games this season.
