Men's Soccer Celebrates Senior Day with 1-0 Win over Navy

BOSTON – After honoring 10 seniors, the Boston University men's soccer team used a 25th-minute goal by freshman Toti Knutsson to claim a 1-0 victory over Navy on Saturday evening at Nickerson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers had three corner kicks and four shot attempts through the first 24 minutes before taking advantage of a failed clear to break the scoreless deadlock.
  • Freshman Maxwell Aunger lofted a cross toward sophomore Matt McDonnell in the box from midfield, but a Navy defender managed to jump high enough to head it toward the corner.
  • Knutsson was in prime position to head the ball at the left post past the keeper at 24:01 for the 1-0 lead.
  • BU continued to attack and went into the locker room with a 10-1 advantage in shot attempts.
  • Navy settled down in the second half to gain more possession of the ball and had three straight corners late in the game, but BU withstood them to claim the victory.
GAME NOTES
  • With the win and three games remaining, BU improved to 5-1-0 in conference play after posting a 4-3-2 mark last season to remain in a tie for first with Loyola Maryland, who owns the tiebreaker ... Lehigh is third at 4-1-1.
  • BU improved to 4-1-0 all-time against Navy with its second consecutive shutout win.
  • After recording his second game winner of the season, Knutsson (3g, 3a) is now tied with McDonnell (4g, 1a) at nine points.
  • Bernardi posted his fifth shutout of the season, all in league play, with two saves, while Navy's Mac Burke had five saves.
NEXT UP: ARMY WEST POINT
  • The Terriers will next go on a two-game road trip, starting with a visit to Army West Point on Wednesday (Oct. 25) at 7 p.m.
  • BU leads the all-time series, 6-2-1, after earning a 1-0 home win last season and a 1-1 draw at Army in 2015.
