BOSTON - After getting off to a solid start in Hockey East play, the No. 6 Boston University men's ice hockey team returns to its non-conference schedule on Friday (Oct. 27) when it hosts top-ranked and defending national champion Denver in the inaugural Red The Rink night at Agganis Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
In conjunction with BU Spirit Day, the Terriers will be wearing red jerseys at Agganis for the first time ever and fans are encouraged to wear red to create a sea of Scarlet throughout the crowd.
This is the first time a top-ranked team has come to Agganis to face the Terriers since Providence on Nov. 14, 2015. That game resulted in a 3-3 draw. BU is 2-0-2 in its past four contests against teams ranked No. 1 in the nation.
The Terriers and Pioneers have played 33 times since first meeting in the 1923-24 season, and Denver holds a slight 16-15-2 after taking both meetings at Magness Arena last season. Denver has won four of the past five meetings and BU has come out on top in eight of the past 14. The Terriers are undefeated in 11 home meetings (9-0-2) against the Pioneers, including a perfect 3-0-0 at Agganis Arena. In the most recent Agganis meeting, BU posted a 5-4 overtime victory on Halloween two seasons ago.
Denver, which has reached the past two Frozen Fours, is undefeated thus far this season with a record of 2-0-2. The Pioneers are coming off a home weekend with Lake Superior State where they settled for a 3-3 draw in the opener before posting a 5-1 win in the finale.
Denver's offense has put up 41 points this season (14g, 27a) and only one of them - an assist - has been recorded by a senior. Sophomore Henrik Borgström (3g, 3a) and juniors Troy Terry (3g, 2a) and Dylan Gambrell (2g, 3a) are tied for the lead in points with five apiece. Sophomore Liam Finlay (2g, 2a) and junior Colin Staub (4a) each have four points.
Senior Tanner Jaillet, a veteran of 91 starts, is the team's primary netminder and currently has a 2.21 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage.
The Terriers dropped a pair of contests at then-No. 10 Denver on Oct. 14-15 of last season. A late comeback effort fell just short in the opener as the Pioneers held on for a 4-3 win. In the finale, Denver broke a 1-1 tie halfway through the third and added an empty-netter for a 3-1 final.
Since the NCHC began play in October 2013, Hockey East has a 54-41-18 record against the eight member schools. Boston University is 5-4-0 in nine games against the NCHC.
The Terriers kicked off Hockey East play last weekend by taking three of four points in a home-and-home series with UConn. Junior Bobo Carpenter scored a pair of shorthanded goals in a 2-2 tie at Agganis Arena in the opener before notching his first collegiate hat trick with three power-play goals in a 6-3 road win the following night.
Carpenter entered the weekend looking for his first goal of the season and he ended up scoring five of the Terriers' eight goals on just nine shots over the course of the two contests. He was named the Hockey East Player of the Week on Monday and now leads the team in goals and is tied with sophomore Patrick Harper for the lead in points with eight.
BU is the only team in the nation that has scored mutliple shorthanded goals this season and Carpenter has both of them. Only a third of BU's 18 goals this season have come in 5-on-5 situations.
