Terriers Complete Weekend Sweep with 3-1 Win over Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior captain Rebecca Leslie tallied two goals and freshman goaltender Corinne Schroeder made 35 saves as the Boston University women's ice hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

GOAL-BY-GOAL

  • Leslie opened the scoring with just 1:46 remaining in the opening period. Sophomore Katie Shannahan began the sequence with a pass in the neutral zone to redshirt sophomore Abbey Stanley, who then got the puck to Leslie at center ice. Leslie shifted to the right wing, skated past two defenders, cut back towards the goal and backhanded a shot that Melisa Black (21 saves) stopped. Leslie knocked home the rebound, however, for her ninth goal of the season.
  • Vermont responded with just 5.1 seconds to play in the frame when Saana Valkama snuck a puck past Schroeder.
  • Leslie lit the lamp for a second time as a Terrier 4-on-3 advantage came to a close. Stanley won a battle along the left half-wall and got the puck to Leslie. She skated to the right circle and roofed a shot into the top corner for her 10th goal of the year. Junior Reagan Rust also assisted on the strike.
  • Senior Victoria Bach made it 3-1 just 1:22 into the third period when she skated from one zone to the other before depositing the puck past Black. Leslie added an assist on the play.
  • Vermont pulled Black in favor of an extra attacker with 2:02 to play, creating a 6-on-3 situation for 33 seconds, but Schroeder and the Terriers held on for the win.

SCHROEDER SENSATIONAL IN THE THIRD

  • After stopping all 16 shots she faced in Friday's final frame, Schroeder once again was brilliant in the third period on Saturday.
  • She made 17 saves in the final 20 minutes to secure the win, helping to hold Vermont 0-for-5 on the power play in that stretch.
  • Eight of those 17 third-period stops came while the Terriers were shorthanded.
  • For the game, Schroeder stopped the final 25 shots she faced over two periods of play.

MONSTER WEEKEND FOR LESLIE

  • Leslie's two-goal effort came less than 24 hours after she recorded four points in the Terriers' 7-1 win over the Catamounts.
  • She recorded three assists and added a goal in Friday's win and finished the weekend with six total points (3g, 3a).

TWO GAMES, FIVE GOALS FOR BACH

  • Bach added to her impressive goal total this weekend with her third-period marker on Saturday.
  • She finished Friday night with four goals and an assist for five points.

SHANNAHAN WITH HER FIRST COLLEGIATE POINT

  • Sophomore Katie Shannahan recorded her first collegiate point with an assist on the opening goal of the game.
  • After missing her entire freshman year due to injury, she has played in all 12 games for the Terriers this season.

TWO MORE POINTS FOR ABBEY

  • Stanley capped a terrific weekend in Vermont with a pair of assists on Saturday.
  • She began the weekend with her first goal as a Terrier on Friday night.
