No. 20 Terriers Cruise to 5-0 Victory over Fairfield in NCAA Opening Round

BOSTON – Senior Allie Renzi and sophomore Kiley Gallagher scored two goals apiece to help the No. 20 Boston University field hockey team roll to a 5-0 victory over Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon in an NCAA Opening Round contest at New Balance Field.

The Terriers advance to face top-ranked and undefeated UConn on Saturday (Nov. 11) in the NCAA First Round.

How It Happened

  • Fairfield controlled possession during the opening minutes but the Terriers quickly got settled and took over by scoring three goals in the first 16 minutes of play.
  • Junior Allie Doggett got things started for BU by penetrating the circle from the right side and sending a centering pass to Renzi, who got a good first touch on the ball to create space before finding the boards from eight yards out at the 5:45 mark.
  • Gallagher pushed the lead to 2-0 when she picked off a failed Fairfield clearing attempt at the top left of the circle and fired a shot past Fairfield goalkeeper Caitlin Gilligan in the 14th minute.
  • Just over two minutes later, freshman Miya Denison jumped on a loose ball in the middle of the circle and scored her sixth goal of the season.
  • Up 3-0 after the opening half, the Terriers added two more goals in the second half to secure the shutout victory.
  • Off a corner, Renzi cleaned up a rebound above the right post off a saved shot by junior Maika Akroyd at 48:23.
  • Gallagher created the 5-0 final when she gathered a deflected pass at the top-right of the circle and sent a reverse-stick shot inside the far post with 13:01 left in regulation.

Game Notes

  • This was Renzi's second two-goal game of her career and Gallagher's first.
  • Half of Gallagher's 18 points this season have come in the postseason.
  • BU held a commanding 21-3 shot advantage and earned two corners while giving up zero on the other end.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Millie Baker played the first half and stopped they only shot she faced to pick up the win in goal before junior Kathleen Keegan played the second half to complete their sixth shared shutout of the season.

Up Next

  • BU turns its focus to UConn as the regional rivals will meet on Saturday in Storrs, Conn., for the NCAA First Round.
  • The teams met in Storrs back on Sept. 18 with the Huskies earning an 8-1 win.
  • The winner advances to Sunday's second round against the winner of Saturday's other first-round contest between defending national champion Delaware and Penn State.
