Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Terriers Take Comm. Ave. Opener, 7-4, at No. 15 BC

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Despite giving up two goals just minutes after the opening faceoff, the Boston University men's ice hockey team stormed back to post a 7-4 road win over archrival and 15th-ranked Boston College on Friday evening at Conte Forum.

Senior captain Brandon Hickey scored a pair of goals and sophomore Patrick Harper had four assists to help the Terriers improve to 7-8-1 on the year and 5-4-1 in Hockey East play. BC had an eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1) snapped and fell to 8-6-2 overall and 8-2-0 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Terriers broke a 3-3 tie with three goals in span of under three minutes in the first half of the second period and never looked back.
  • Soon after puck drop, BC ignited the home crowd with goals at 1:32 and 2:16 of the opening period.
  • The Terriers started their comeback when Hickey scored midway through the first on a shot that got through traffic at top of the zone.
  • Freshman Logan Cockerill tied the game just over three minutes later and a goal on a shorthanded breakaway by Brady Tkachuk with 1:46 left in the first allowed the Terriers to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
  • The Eagles tied the game on Ron Greco's second tally of the night at 2:41 of the second before a power-play goal by sophomore Chad Krys at 5:43 gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.
  • Hickey secured his second two-goal game of his career on a rebound in front at 7:54 of the middle stanza and that proved to be the eventual game-winner.
  • Junior Bobo Carpenter capped the three-goal stretch on a power-play marker at 8:41 to create a 6-3 lead for the Terriers.
  • The Eagles got a man-up goal from Julius Mattila with 50 seconds left in the second to get within two at 6-4 heading into the second intermission.
  • The third period was a different story as both defenses were up to the task before the Terriers closed out the win with an empty-netter by freshman Shane Bowers.

GAME NOTES

  • Sophomore Jake Oettinger made 29 saves to improve to 4-1-0 against BC in his career.
  • On the other end, sophomore Joseph Woll turned aside 28 Terrier shots for BC.
  • Bowers added two assists for a career-high three-point performance while Carpenter, Cockerill and Tkachuk each earned one assist apiece to record two-point nights.
  • BU scored three goals in each of the first two periods after scoring a trio of goals in the final period of its most recent game last Saturday against Cornell. Those nine goals represent 19.1 percent of the Terriers' scoring this season.
  • BU has now won four consecutive regular-season meetings with BC for the first time since winning 11 straight from Dec. 9, 1992, to March 4, 1995.
