Terriers Edge Army, 60-59, in Patriot League Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Hitting the road for its Patriot League opener, the Boston University women's basketball team staved off Army West Point, 60-59, Friday afternoon at Christl Arena.
 
Nia Irving recorded her second straight double-double with 14 rebounds to go with a season-high 22 points, including the go-ahead basket with 11.8 seconds left. Payton Hauck set a new career-high and led all scorers with 23 points on an efficient 9-for-13 shooting clip, while Katie Nelson matched a season-high with eight assists.

How it Happened
  • Army opened the game with a 7-0 run over the first two minutes of action.
  • Irving and Hauck netted the next 10 points for BU, cutting the deficit to 15-10 with 4:19 left in the first, though Army extended its lead to 21-12 at the end of the frame.
  • The Terriers opened the second quarter with a 12-2 run, capped by a slashing drive the lane by Hauck, who gave BU its first lead of the game at 24-23 with 5:07 remaining.
  • The Black Knights briefly reclaimed the upper hand before BU closed out the half with a 4-0 run to hold the scoreboard in its favor, 28-27.
  • Army took the lead to start the second half and held the Terriers at bay until Corrine Williams hit a pair from the line to put BU back on top, 37-35, with 4:15 left in the third.
  • Hauck powered the attack with eight points in the quarter to give BU a 43-39 lead with just over a minute left, though the score held at 43-all heading into the fourth.
  • BU opened the fourth with an 8-0 run to stake its largest lead of the game, 51-42, with 6:33 remaining.
  • Army rode a 5-0 run to come within one possession, 53-50, before converting on an and-1 to tie the game back up at 56-all with 2:39 left.
  • With just over a minute left, Irving put in her 20th point to give the lead back to BU, but the Black Knights responded to go up 59-58 with 1:02 remaining.
  • Irving came up in the clutch again, netting the go-ahead basket off a feed from Williams with 11.8 ticks left.
Game Notes
  • BU has now won two straight games in West Point for the first time in program history. The Terriers also have their first winning streak against Army since winning three straight from 1980-1982.
  • Irving tallied her second straight double-double and has four double-doubles over the last 10 games.
  • Hauck and Irving combined for 22 of BU's 28 points in the first half and 45 total points.
