Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Terriers Edged by No. 8/10 Providence, 6-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Seniors Victoria Bach and Rebecca Leslie each notched three points, but the Boston University women's ice hockey team was edged, 6-5, at No. 8/10 Providence on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Providence tallied three goals in the opening 20 minutes, including two on the power play, to grab an early 3-0 lead.
  • Bach notched her first goal of the game on the Terriers' first power-play chance of the afternoon at 11:04 of the second stanza. Sophomore Abby Cook left the puck for Leslie at the top of the zone. Leslie then found Bach in the left circle with a pass. Bach skated to the slot and slotted a backhander inside the right post.
  • The Terriers cut the lead to 3-2 with a shorthanded goal at 17:29 of the middle frame. Leslie intercepted a pass in the defensive zone and created a 2-on-1 with Bach. Bach took a perfect pass from Leslie, skated past the lone defender and tucked the puck past Madison Myers for her NCAA-leading 23rd goal of the season.
  • Providence extended its lead to 4-2 with 9:49 to play in the third period thanks to a shorthanded goal, but the Terriers got the goal right back just 1:05 later. Leslie chipped the puck out of the zone to Bach, who skated up the right wing. She got to the bottom of the circle, stopped, got the defender to commit, and then found freshman Nara Elia open at the left post for her fourth goal of the year.
  • The Friars answered with two more goals, however, to take a 6-3 lead with 4:46 remaining in regulation.
  • BU did not quit and nearly completed a three-goal comeback thanks to some extra-attacker heroics. It began when junior Mary Grace Kelley tipped home a shot from Cook. Freshman Jesse Compher had the secondary helper on the 6-on-4 strike, Kelley's fourth of the year, which came at 18:26.
  • Just 32 seconds later, redshirt sophomore Abbey Stanley then made it 6-5 with another 6-on-4 goal. Compher kept the puck alive in a scrum at the top of the crease, and Elia then tapped the puck to Stanley at the right post, who notched her third goal of the season.
  • BU once again created a 6-on-4 advantage with an empty net and had several chances to equalize, but the Friars held on for the victory.
