MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore Alexa Ponce and junior Kaitlin Sahlinger recorded two RBIs apiece to help the Boston University softball team end the Madeira Beach Invitational with a 5-4 win over Southern Illinois on Sunday afternoon.

TURNING POINT
- Facing a 4-3 deficit in the top of the fifth, the Terriers scored two runs despite only having one hit in the top of the fifth.
- Sophomore Alexa Ponce took advantage of SIU's two errors with a one-out RBI single, and junior Kaitlin Sahlinger was hit by a pitch to plate what proved to be the game-winning run.
- Freshman Kali Magane limited the Salukis to just two hits and a walk over the final three innings to seal the victory.
THE SETUP
- The Terriers jumped out of the gate with two runs in the first off senior Gabi Martinez's two-out RBI double and Ponce's RBI single.
- SIU though quickly tied the game against freshman Lizzie Annerino with a walk, RBI triple and RBI single.
- After Magane pitched a scoreless second and third in relief, BU briefly retook the lead in the fourth on back-to-back doubles from junior Jilee Schanda and Sahlinger.
- The Salukis grabbed their lone lead in the bottom half with a one-out, two-RBI single.
NEXT UP
- BU will take the following week off and then travel west for an extended stay in California.
- The Terriers will compete at both the San Diego Classic (March 3-5) and the Louisville Slugger Invitational co-hosted by Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton (March 9-11) ... They will also visit Loyola Marymount for a doubleheader on March 7.
