Terriers to Host Army in PL Final Rematch Weekend Series

BOSTON – Resuming Patriot League action, the Boston University softball team will kick off a five-game homestand against Army West Point with Saturday's doubleheader slated to begin at 12 p.m. The teams will meet for the first time since the Terriers captured the 2016 Patriot League title against the Black Knights, 9-0, in five innings and will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday at 12 p.m.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU is currently fourth in the Patriot League standings at 3-3 after claiming a sweep at Holy Cross and suffering a sweep at PL preseason favorite Lehigh ... The Terriers are one game ahead of the Crusaders, who will coincidentally be hosting the Mountain Hawks this weekend.
  • The Terriers are 3-1 at home with the sweep over Holy Cross and a 4-2 loss to Bryant ... They have a total of 12 home games remaining. 
  • Coming off a hard-fought 3-1 loss at Boston College, the Terriers rank sixth in the PL in batting average at .264 but rise to second through six conference games at .331.
  • Senior Gabi Martinez is 7-of-15 (.467) with two doubles in conference play, while sophomore Alex Heinen owns a team-high eight RBIs with a three-run homer against Holy Cross ... Overall, the two have combined for 44 RBIs, 14 doubles and 10 homers.
  • Senior Moriah Connolly leads the Terriers overall at .355 with 31 runs scored and 26 stolen bases ... In PL action, junior Jilee Schanda (.289 avg) has scored seven runs alongside Connolly by hitting a combined 7-of-16.
  • BU's pitching staff owns a 4.42 ERA and is holding opponents to a .300 batting average ... Freshman Kali Magane (6-8, 3.87 ERA) owns 14 starts and six complete-game performances, while senior Makinna Akers (5-7, 3.41 ERA) has three complete games in five starts.
SCOUTING ARMY WEST POINT
  • The Black Knights are coming off a 5-2 loss at Fairfield in which their five-game win streak came to an end.
  • Army is 7-2 in the Patriot League with sweeps over Colgate and Lafayette ... The Black Knights opened with a 7-6 win over Holy Cross before falling to the Crusaders, 4-2 and 5-2.
  • The Black Knights are hitting .270 with 11 homers and 47 doubles ... Five of them are batting over .300.
  • Ashley Yoo leads the way at .367, while Emily Ballesteros (.296 avg) owns a team-high 26 RBIs, nine doubles, three triples and two homers.
  • PL Preseason Player of the Year Alee Rashenskas is hitting .300 with 13 RBIs and nine stolen bases.
  • Army is led by the pitching staff which is holding opponents to a .255 average ... PL Preseason Pitcher of the Year Renee Poirier (10-5, 1.96 ERA) is holding opponents to .226 average with a team-high 64 strikeouts in 103.2 innings, while Caroline Smith (8-3, 2.25 ERA) has 17 strikeouts in 74.2 innings.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Army is 7-5 against the Terriers since BU joined the Patriot League in 2013-14 ... The Terriers though have the three biggest wins, first eliminating the Black Knights in the 2014 PL semifinals, 8-0 ... BU followed up in 2016 by claiming an opening-round 3-2 victory and then a 9-0 title game win.
  • BU went 3-1 in its first season with a PL semifinal win and loss at Army.
  • In 2015, The Black Knights swept all three games by a combined score of 23-13 and then followed in 2016 at home with another sweep by a combined score of 16-12.
  • Martinez, Wong and Heinen all had an RBI single in the 3-2 victory to open the 2016 PL tournament ... Martinez and Sahlinger both had two-RBI hits to help BU claim a 9-0 victory and the automatic NCAA berth.
