Terriers Help Penguins Repeat as Stanley Cup Champions
June 13, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
Bolstered by Boston University alumni throughout the organization, the Pittsburgh Penguins successfully defended their Stanley Cup title on Sunday evening by closing out the NHL championship series in six games over the Nashville Predators.
Mike Sullivan became the first American-born head coach to win multiple Stanley Cup titles and Nick Bonino is now the third Terrier to hoist the Cup twice as a player, joining Jay Pandolfo and Scott Young. Former BU video coordinator Andy Saucier is the Penguins' video coach.
Clark Donatelli helped to develop several players who were key to the Cup run as the head coach of the organization's AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. David Warsofsky, who finished second on the WBS Penguins in scoring this season, played in seven contests for the parent club and Sahir Gill played 44 games this season for Donatelli at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Sean Maguire was the primary goaltender for the Penguins' ECHL affiliate, the Wheeling Nailers, giving BU a total of seven alumni in the organization.
Bonino put up 37 points (18g, 19a) in the regular season before adding seven more in the playoffs on four goals and three assists. In Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, the centerman tallied two goals and earned first-star honors before going down with a leg injury in Game 2 as the result of a blocked shot. At the end of the series, it was revealed that a broken tibia caused him to miss the remainder of the series.
This marks the first time in 16 years that a Terrier is on the Cup-winning team in consecutive years. Pandolfo won his second title with New Jersey in 2000 and Chris Drury hoisted the Cup the following year with Colorado.
BU was well-represented on both sides of this year's final series as Colin Wilson, Bonino's teammate on BU's 2009 national championship team, played in his first Stanley Cup Final. In addition, former Terriers Paul Fenton (assistant general manager) and Jeff Kealty (top amateur scout) are members of the Predators' front office.
