BOSTON - Freshman
Ailsa Connolly's goal just over 22 minutes into the game stood for the remainder of regulation as the No. 16 Boston University field hockey team claimed the Terrier Classic title with a 1-0 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon at New Balance Field.
BU successfully defended its title in the season-opening tournament, which took place at UNH last season as the Wildcat Classic with BU coming away with a 4-3 win over the hosts. This time around, the Terriers posted a 4-0 win over Bryant in Friday's opening round before posting another shutout on Sunday in the championship match.Â
How it Happened
- Junior Kathleen Keegan (5 saves) and freshman Millie Baker (3 saves) stopped every shot they faced and Connolly provided the only goal the Terriers would need with help from two of her rookie classmates.
- As the 22nd minute came to an end, Petra Hall controlled the ball just outside the right side of the circle and spotted Maggie New open in the middle. New dribbled towards the right post and slid the ball across the goalmouth to Connolly, who knocked it in at the left post for her second goal in as many games.
- BU controlled play for the majority of the first half before the visiting Wildcats applied more pressure after halftime.Â
- The Terrier defense stood tall, including on a corner that was awarded to UNH in the final second of regulation. Senior co-captain Kali Shumock raced out to the top of the circle to block UNH's attempt and put the finishing touches on the victory.
Game Notes
- The Terriers are 2-0 to start a season for the fourth time in the past six seasons and this is the first time since 1992 that BU has opened with back-to-back shutouts.
- UNH held a 13-11 shot advantage and earned all four of the game's corners.
- New's assist was the first point of her collegiate career.
- Connolly has recorded two shots on the young season and she scored on both of them.
- Keegan earned the start in goal for BU and came up with some key stops before Baker did the same after halftime.
- Keegan has now played 98:51 during her career and has yet to allow a goal.
