Defense Paces Women's Soccer to 1-1 Draw With Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. – In its second straight double overtime game, the Boston University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw after contending 110 minutes against Arizona in its final game of the Sun Devil Desert Classic.

Christina Wakefield put the Terriers on the board in the 10th minute with her first score of the season off a rebound just outside the six-yard box. Arizona would respond in the 76th minute as it delivered the equalizer on a one-timer to the back right post. The Wildcats outshot BU 6-1 over the two overtime frames, but the defense held firm as BU came away with its second straight draw against a Pac-12 opponent.

How it Happened
  • Anna Heilferty got BU's first shot of the game off in the 10th minute, roping a shot towards the upper-90. Arizona's keeper punched away the sure-fire goal, though Wakefield darted in and buried the rebound.
  • The Wildcats delivered the equalizer in the 76th minute on a slick one-timer in the box off a cross from the left side.
  • Hannah Ciolek and the defense fended off Arizona for the rest of the game, as Ciolek finished with seven saves to match a career high.
Game Notes
  • BU's opening five shots were all on frame. The lone shot that wasn't on goal was blocked by the Wildcats in the second overtime.
  • Wakefield's score was the fastest he Terriers have gotten on the board this season. Jesse Shreck's score in the 19th minute against Northeastern previously held the fastest scoring mark.
  • Ciolek has made at least five saves in each of the past two games, finishing with 12 on the weekend, and has three five-save efforts on the season.
From Coach Feldman
  • "We gutted it out today. Really stuck together under challenging conditions."
  • "Put two good games together here in Arizona against two quality Pac-12 teams."
