Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Terrier Defense Shines in 72-58 Win over Colgate

BOSTON – Boosted by sophomore Tyler Scanlon's third double-double of the season, the Boston University men's basketball team held Colgate below 30 percent shooting for the 72-58 win on Thursday night at Case Gym.

With four men reaching double figures, the Terriers (8-8, 4-1 PL) shot 50.0 percent from the field to claim their third-straight home win and limited the Raiders (8-8, 3-2 PL) to just six 3-pointers on 34 attempts (.176). Scanlon led BU with a career-high 11 rebounds and 14 points to keep the Terriers in a tie for first in the Patriot League standings with Bucknell.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Jordan Swopshire tied the game for the third time at 14:04 (6-6) on a layup and the Terriers missed a jumper, senior Will Goff used a steal to help set up classmate Eric Johnson's layup and then followed up with a 3-pointer to grab the lead for good.
  • Sean O'Brien hit a 3-pointer in response, but freshman Andrew Petcash hit a jumper on the ensuing possession to spark a 7-0 spurt capped by senior Cedric Hankerson's trey.
  • The Raiders later cut the deficit to four at 5:05 (20-16), 3:00 (25-21) and 1:50 (28-24) on 3-pointers by Jordan Bums but would never get any closer.
  • Scanlon opened the second half with a 3-pointer to give the Terriers their first double-digit lead (34-24) of the second half.
  • Francisco Amiel tried to ignite a rally for Colgate with a 3-pointer and jumper at 7:50 to pull the Raiders within seven (51-44), but sophomore Max Mahoney came right back with a contested layup while being fouled.
  • Scanlon all but put the game away at 3:17 by hitting a floater and the free throw to put the Terriers ahead, 61-47.
  • The second half was a slog, as the teams combined for 41 free throw attempts after recording just six total in the first.
  • Colgate started 11-of-11 to stay within striking distance but finished 5-of-10 down the stretch, while the Terriers went 9-of-10 during the final 2:30 after opening the game 8-of-16 for the victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Scanlon earned his third double-double in four contests, while Mahoney had 14 points and seven boards to help the Terriers out-rebound Colgate, 39-36.
  • After missing Monday's 92-81 win over Lehigh due to injury, Hankerson tallied 14 points off the bench along with two steals in 31 minutes of action.
  • Freshman Javante McCoy was the fourth in double figures at 10 points with the help of two 3-pointers.
  • Burns led Colgate with 18 points and five assists, while Swopshire nearly had a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
  • Reigning PL Rookie of the Year Will Rayman had nine rebounds but finished 2-of-7 for a season-low seven points ... Averaging 15.3 ppg, he failed to reach double figures for just the second time this season after posting eight points in a 72-62 win over Cornell back on Nov. 16.
  • Colgate's 29.5 percent shooting (18-of-61 FG) is the second lowest performance this season by a Patriot League team this season, finishing just ahead of Navy's 16-of-57 FG (.281) game at Penn back on Nov. 15.
  • BU also held Wheaton (14-of-53 FG, .264) below 30 percent shooting this season.
  • The Terriers improved to 27-19 all-time against Colgate and 5-4 in Patriot League action with their third win in four meetings.
NEXT UP: HOLY CROSS
  • The Terriers will remain in Massachusetts for the third straight game, as they will visit in-state foe Holy Cross on Sunday (Jan. 14) at 1 p.m.
  • BU has won the last three meetings, including last year's thrilling 71-68 OT victory at Holy Cross at the end of the regular season.
  • The contest is part of the annual Turnpike Trophy all-sports competition featuring the two schools … BU enters the weekend with a 5-2 lead following the conclusion of the fall sports season.
