Terriers Triumph at Navy, 75-68

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Featuring a season-high 16 points from freshman Javante McCoy and a career-high six assists by sophomore Tyler Scanlon, the Boston University men's basketball team claimed a hard-fought 75-68 victory at Navy on Saturday afternoon.

The Terriers (10-9, 6-2 PL) shot 66.7 percent in the second half to remain in sole possession of second in the Patriot League, as the Midshipmen fell to 13-8 and 4-4 in conference play.

TURNING POINT
  • Clinging to a 52-51 lead with 7:06 left in regulation, McCoy hit a 3-pointer and followed up a minute later with a steal and slam dunk for the six-point advantage.
  • The Midshipmen pulled within four (60-56) at 4:08 on George Kiernan's fourth 3-pointer, but senior Will Goff flushed one in response at 3:15 to keep Navy at a distance.
  • BU went 12-of-14 from the charity stripe in the final 91 seconds to seal the victory.
THE SETUP
  • Keyed by 3-pointers from seniors Cedric Hankerson and Eric Johnson, the Terriers jumped out to a 13-4 lead at 12:05 and pushed the advantage to 17-6 two minutes later on McCoy's layup.
  • McCoy added another layup with the free throw to give BU a 22-12 lead at 7:16, but the Mids drained back-to-back 3-pointers.
  • Down 25-18 with 4:40 remaining, Navy chipped away at the lead and pulled within two at 2:06 and 39 seconds.
  • BU committed its ninth turnover on its final possession of the half with a charge, but the defense maintained the two-point lead by intercepting a pass before the buzzer.
  • The Mids briefly took the lead to open the second half on Evan Wieck's layup and Tom Lacey's free throw, but Scanlon put the Terriers ahead for good by hitting a layup of his own.
  • After Scanlon fed Johnson for a 3-pointer at 16:19 to pull ahead, 38-32, Kierrnan drained two treys over the next three minutes to help keep the deficit at two (44-42).
  • The teams traded blows during the following six minutes with BU unable to get the lead beyond six points. 
  • Preseason All-PL honoree Shawn Anderson later hit a short jumper to pull Navy within one (52-51), at which point McCoy drained his lone 3-pointer of the game.
GAME NOTES
  • BU improved to 6-5 this season on the road after finishing 6-9 last year ... The Terriers have five road games remaining.
  • McCoy was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and at the line to top his previous season high of 15 points.
  • Besides contributing 10 points, Scanlon tallied six assists to edge his previous best in assists by one while committing just one turnover.
  • Celebrating his 23rd birthday, BU leading scorer Hankerson (14.4 ppg) suffered an apparent leg injury five minutes into the first half and did not return ... No. 2 scorer and sophomore Max Mahoney (12.2 ppg) was plagued by foul trouble for most of the contest but still managed nine points and three blocks in 16 minutes.
  • Both Goff (10 pts.) and Johnson (8 pts.) hit a pair of 3-pointers, as BU had six men total score from downtown on 8-of-14 shooting.
  • Johnson added a team-high five rebounds with two assists and a block to lead the Terriers in rebounding for the first time in his career.
  • Playing a season-high 16 minutes, freshman Andrew Petcash had a season-high three assists with a 3-pointer, two rebounds and free throw.
  • The Terriers improved to 9-2 all-time against Navy, as the road team won for the fifth consecutive contest in the series.
  • BU finished 25-of-45 (.556) to become the third opponent this season to shoot over 55 percent against Navy and the first at Alumni Hall, as the Midshipment fell to 7-3 at home.
  • Kiernan went 7-of-14 and 4-of-9 from behind the arc to lead Navy with 22 points, while Hasan Abdullah had seven points and eight assists ... Tom Lacey added 12 points and 16 rebounds with three assists and two steals.
NEXT UP: LAFAYETTE
  • The Terriers will remain on the road and travel to Lafayette on Wednesday (Jan. 24) with a 7 p.m. start.
  • BU has won the last four meetings, including both contests last season by an average of 16.5 ppg.
