Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Loyola Maryland Outlasts Men's Basketball, 68-65

BALTIMORE, Md. – Trying to mount a rally from an 11-point second-half deficit, the Boston University men's basketball team missed the go-ahead hook shot with five seconds remaining, as Loyola Maryland escaped, 68-65, on Friday night at Reitz Arena.

With their third-straight home win, the Greyhounds (4-10) improve to 4-2 in Baltimore and are now in a six-way tie for first in the Patriot League with the Terriers (6-8) at 2-1 in conference play.

THE FINAL MINUTE
  • 2017 All-PL First Team member Andre Walker hit a tightly-contested jumper for a 66-62 lead with 56 seconds remaining but missed the 1-and-1 at the 29-second mark.
  • Senior Will Goff shortly thereafter grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed layup attempt and found freshman Javante McCoy for a deep 3-pointer, prompting a BU timeout.
  • The Greyhounds turned the ball over on the inbounds, but BU couldn't take advantage and grab the lead, as sophomore Max Mahoney hit the front end of the rim from inside the free throw line.
  • Loyola corralled the rebound and sealed the victory with two free throws.
THE SETUP
  • Mahoney opened the game with a layup and Cedric Hankerson hit one of his own at 17:00 to give the Terriers the early 8-2 lead.
  • Andre Walker though used a pair of 3-pointers to spark a 19-4 run capped by Andrew Kostecka's trey from the corner at 9:25 to grab the lead for good.
  • One minute later, Walker completed a 3-point play with the bonus free throw to give the Greyhounds their largest lead of the half, 24-14.
  • Down 10 with 5:50 left in the half, Eric Johnson hit a 3-pointer, and Walter Whyte followed with a steal and layup to help BU go on a 11-2 run ending with two free throws at 3:30.
  • The Terriers had two possessions to grab the lead but were unable to connect, as Loyola entered the locker room with a 34-29 advantage.
  • Walker drained two 3-pointers early in the second half to extend the lead to 44-33 at 17:44.
  • BU pulled within two at 13:03 (48-46) and 10:27 (53-51), but Loyola hit a 3-pointer in response both times.
  • The Terriers never got any closer until McCoy's 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining in regulation.

  • Mahoney went 10-of-18 for 22 points, seven shy of his career best set earlier this season, with eight rebounds.
  • The Terriers were held to a season-low three field goals and nine 3-point attempts.
  • Loyola's Walker averaged 26.0 ppg in three games last season and finished tonight with 27 points (10-of-20 FG, 4-of-8 3FG), four assists and two steals.

NEXT UP: LEHIGH
  • The Terriers will have a quick turnaround and return home to host Lehigh on Monday (Jan. 8) at 7 p.m.
  • Last season, BU claimed its first-ever regular-season sweep over the Mountain Hawks since joining the Patriot League in the summer of 2013.
  • Lehigh though had the final word in the conference tournament semifinals by edging the Terriers in a thrilling 91-88 double-overtime contest at Case Gym.
