Terriers Ride Hot First-Half Shooting to 92-81 Home Win over Lehigh

BOSTON - Sophomore Max Mahoney led four Terriers in double figures with a game-high 22 points to help the Boston University men's basketball team post a 92-81 victory over Lehigh on Monday evening at Case Gym.

Senior Will Goff and freshman Walter Whyte matched career highs with 17 and 16 points, respectively, and Whyte added a game-high 11 rebounds for his first double-double, as the Terriers (7-8, 3-1 PL) avenged last year's double-overtime Patriot League semifinal defeat to the Mountain Hawks (7-8, 2-2 PL).

THE TURNING POINT
  • After Lehigh took a 14-13 lead with 14:25 remaining in the first half, BU closed out on a 36-11 run and never looked back.
  • Starting for injured and senior leading scorer Cedric Hankerson (14.7 ppg), Goff provided the spark with back-to-back 3-pointers before draining his fifth trey at 3:42 for a 41-22 lead.
  • Freshman Sukhmail Mathon hit the final field goal with 45 seconds remaining to enter the locker room ahead, 49-25.
  • The Terriers shot 60.0 FG% in the first half with seven 3-pointers, while holding the Mountain Hawks to 36.7 FG% and just two 3-pointers on nine attempts.
SECOND HALF
  • Mahoney opened with a tough layup and free throw to give BU its largest lead of the game, 52-25.
  • The Mountain Hawks started 7-of-10 and recorded 12 3-pointers to help cut the deficit to as low as nine (88-79) with 1:05 remaining.
  • Sophomore Tyler Scanlon though helped prevent any serious rally by scoring all 17 of his points in the second half.
  • BU also went 14-of-21 from the charity stripe during the final 20 minutes to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
  • The Terriers' 92 points marked a season high and their most ever scored in a Patriot League regular season game, topping the 91 scored at Lafayette on Jan. 8, 2017.
  • Whyte became the fourth different Terrier to record a double-double this season after Scanlon claimed two last week on the road ... Mahoney and senior Nick Havener have the other two this season
  • Goff tied both career highs in made 3-pointers and points, which were set last week in the 84-79 win at defending PL champion Bucknell.
  • The Terriers finished with a season-high nine blocks with seven contributing at least one apiece.
  • Lehigh's Lance Tejada (21 pts.) and Pat Andree (19 pts.) both drained five 3-pointers apiece, while preseason All-PL member Kahron Ross had 12 points and four assists.
  • BU held a 48-28 advantage in points in the paint and went 20-of-28 (.714) from the free-throw line, while holding Lehigh to just seven free-throw attempts.
  • The Terriers improved to 7-4 all-time against Lehigh and have now won four straight during the regular season against the Mountain Hawks.
  • The result marked the 200th-career win for BU head coach Joe Jones (114 at BU, 86 at Columbia).
NEXT UP: COLGATE
  • The Terriers will remain home and host the Raiders on Thursday (Jan. 11) at 7 p.m.
  • Both teams are currently tied for first in the PL at 3-1 along with Bucknell.
  • They are even in the series, 4-4, since BU joined the PL in the summer of 2013 with both squads winning on the road last year.
