Early Petursson Goal Lifts Terriers to 1-0 Win over Army West Point

BOSTON – Boosted by freshman Kari Petursson's 12th-minute goal and four combined saves from the defense, the Boston University men's soccer team remained in the hunt for a Patriot League tournament berth with a big 1-0 victory over Army West Point on Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.

The victory not only snapped a four-game winless streak for the Terriers (4-9-2, 3-3-1 PL) but also propelled them past the Black Knights (6-8-1, 3-4-0 PL) into a tie for fifth in the conference standings with Saturday's upcoming opponent, Bucknell, at 10 points apiece. Just two PL games remain and only six teams advance to the conference tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers earned three corner kicks during the first six minutes of action but the Black Knights had a save and block to keep BU off the scoreboard.
  • In the 12th minute, Army keeper Justin Stoll tossed the ball up the field toward the left side, but Petursson forced a turnover to put BU on the counter.
  • Petursson moved around multiple defenders to center the ball and fired a low grounder inside the right post from 20 yards out for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Terriers almost extended the lead in the 41st minute when sophomore Maxwell Aunger whipped a cross into the box to set up senior Adam Wright's header, but the shot went just wide left of the post.
  • Army nearly netted the equalizer in the final minute of the half after launching a free kick from midfield toward BU's box.
  • Eric Whiteman had a one-time shot following a Black Knight header on the free kick, but senior Mike Bernardi moved up to deflect the point-blank attempt and senior David Riccio was perfectly positioned to clear the ball once it went past Bernardi toward the empty net.
  • Bernardi made a leaping save in the 61st minute on Keenan O'Shea's hard 25-yard rising shot, and the backline followed up by clearing the ensuing corner kick.
  • The Black Knights had two more free kicks from midfield in the final three minutes, but they were unable to get off a shot attempt for the loss.
GAME NOTES
  • Petursson moved into sole possession of second on the team with nine points following his third goal of the season.
  • The goal also marked Petursson's second game winner of the season with his first coming against defending Atlantic 10 champion UMass in a 3-2 win back on Sept. 7.
  • The shutout marked Bernardi's third of the season following earlier 1-0 win over Holy Cross and 0-0 draw against Lafayette.
  • Army was blanked after tallying a combined eight goals in the last three games.
  • BU finished with a 7-6 advantage in shots as Bernardi totaled three saves against Stoll's two stops.
  • The Terriers improved to 8-2-1 all-time against Army and are now 5-1-1 in the series since joining the PL.
NEXT UP: BUCKNELL
  • The Terriers will conclude the home regular season schedule on Saturday (Oct. 27) against the Bison with a 2 p.m. start time.
  • Prior to the contest, BU will honor its senior class.
  • BU and Bucknell are tied-for-fifth in the PL standings at 10 points, one ahead of Army, with two games remaining.
  • All seven meetings have gone to overtime with the Bison winning two of the contests in 2013 and 2014.
