POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Contending against perennial MAAC power Marist, the Boston University women's basketball team had three double-digit scorers, but fell to the Red Foxes 68-57 Friday night at McCann Arena.
Nia Irving led all scorers with 16 points, all coming in the second half, including 10 in the third quarter.
Naiyah Thompson followed with 13 points, while
Lauren Spearman led the squad with seven rebounds and chipped in 12 points from beyond-the-arc.
How It Happened
- Payton Hauck carried the Terriers to open the game, slashing through the lane for a floater before drilling a 3-pointer from the corner to cut an early deficit to 9-6 midway through the frame.
- Spearman started to hit a groove from beyond-the-arc, connecting with 2:32 left in the first to make it one-point game at 10-9, though Marist responded with a 5-0 run to take a 15-9 lead at the end of the quarter.
- Thompson started the second off with a steal and went coast-to-coast for a fast break layup, but the Red Foxes answered once again, this time with a 9-2 run to take an 11-point lead.
- BU converted on three straight offensive possessions, capped by a Spearman triple in transition cut the gap to 27-22 with 3:18 left on the clock.
- The Terriers stayed hot from deep, as Spearman drilled back-to-back triples, while Katie Nelson capped the half with another as the scoreboard stood at 37-31 in favor of Marist at the half.
- Nia Irving opened the second half with three consecutive layups, making it a one-possession game at 39-37 with 4:16 left in the third.
- The Red Foxes caught the hot hand from 3-point range, pouring in four straight, while Irving closed her 10-point quarter with another layup to make it a 51-45 game.
- Two free throws from Naiyah Thompson made it a two-possession game, 59-53, with 3:36 left, though Marist pulled away down the stretch from the free throw line to seal the win.

- Irving led the team in scoring and shot .600 percent for the second straight game.
- Spearman's scoring came in the first half, making 4-of-7 attempts from 3-point range.
- BU put forth its best performance from the charity stripe this season, hitting on 92.9 percent (13-for-14).
- The 11-point defeat was the closet BU has played Marist since falling 76-65 on Dec. 14, 2013.
