CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Jake Oettinger stopped all 42 shots he faced as the Boston University men's ice hockey team and Boston College played to the first scoreless draw of their 279-game storied rivalry on Saturday evening at Conte Forum.
The Terriers got a point out of the weekend home-and-home series with their archrival to move to 4-7-2 overall and 4-4-2 in Hockey East play. BC, which got a 26-save shutout from Joseph Woll, now stands at 4-6-2 with a 4-1-2 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Defense ruled the night and the respective penalty kill units were strong as the teams combined for just nine shots on seven unsuccessful power plays.
- A back-and-forth opening period was penalty-free and Oettinger was forced to make 16 saves before the first intermission.
- Each team had two power-play opportunities in the middle stanza but could not solve the netminders.
- After coming off last weekend's trip to Northern Ireland, BU found a reserve tank of energy in the third and held a 10-9 shot advantage and created a handful of strong scoring chances in the period before the game headed to overtime.
- A nifty move by freshman Joel Farabee in the closing seconds of overtime gave him a good look from the slot, but his shot hit Woll and the final horn sounded.
GAME NOTES
- Oettinger is three shutouts away from BU's career record of 13 shared by John Curry (2003-07) and Jack Ferreira (1963-66).Â
- Woll stopped all 26 of BU's shots to earn the fourth shutout of his career.
- BU went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Eagles came up empty on three chances with the man advantage.
- This was the fourth scoreless tie in program history and the first since the 2006-07 season, when the Terriers had two, both at home (1/6/07 vs. Northeastern, 2/2/07 vs. UMass Lowell).Â
- The Terriers and Eagles played a scoreless regulation in just one previous meeting as BC came out on top in the 2016 Beanpot final with a goal in the second minute of overtime.Â
UP NEXT
- BU returns to action on Friday (Dec. 7) when it hosts UMass Lowell in the opener of a home-and-home weekend.
- Game time at Agganis Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.
