No. 20 BU Falls to No. 12 Northeastern in Beanpot Final, 5-2

BOSTON – A trio of power play goals helped lift No. 12 Northeastern to a 5-2 win over No. 20 Boston University men's ice hockey in the championship game of the annual Beanpot tournament on Monday night at TD Garden.

Tournament MVP Adam Gaudette scored thrice for the Huskies while the Terriers got their offense on goals from Logan Cockerill and Shane Bowers. BU held a 40-27 edge in shots on goal but Eberly Trophy recipient Cayden Primeau stopped 38 of them for the Huskies.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers thought they had scored the game's first goal just over 2:00 into the contest but Drew Melanson's tally was taken off of the board upon video review due to goaltender interference.
  • The Terriers took a 1-0 lead at the 12:35 mark of the first period when Logan Cockerill attempted a centering pass from behind the net but the puck hit the back of goalie Cayden Primeau's leg and went into the Husky cage.
  • The lead lasted only about two minutes as Nolan Stevens dangled his way around a pair of Terrier defenders to score on the power play at the 14:38 mark.
  • Owners of Hockey East's top power play, Northeastern scored on its second attempt of the game as well. Jake Oettinger kick saved a Dylan Sikura shot but it went right to Adam Gaudette who had an empty net to shoot at, scoring at 17:32 and giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
  • Northeastern went up 3-1 with 5:28 left in the second period when defenseman Trevor Owens snuck in from the blue line and ripped a wrister top corner over Oettinger's stick-side shoulder.
  • The Huskies got their third power play with 35 seconds left in the second period and capitalized for the third time. Gaudette shot one in off of Oettinger's back from the corner behind his own goal line with 3.5 seconds remaining in the period.
  • Shane Bowers scored for BU with 2:40 left in regulation to make it a 4-2 game. Bowers redirected a Cockerill shot on net which Primeau saved. Primeau saved Bowers' swipe at the rebound but the second rebound went off of a Husky defenseman's leg and back through the goalie's pads for Bowers' 16th goal of the year.
  • Gaudette completed his hat trick with 30.1 seconds left in the game to account for the 5-2 final.
GAME NOTES
  • Sophomore Chad Krys collected his 20th point of the year on Cockerill's first period goal. Krys is the seventh Terrier to record at least 20 points on the season. No other Hockey East team has more than five. The other six Terriers with at least 20 points thus far in 2017-18 are Bobo Carpenter, Jordan Greenway, Shane Bowers, Dante Fabbro, Brady Tkachuk and Patrick Harper.
  • Tonight's game marked the first time BU had trailed after the first period since Dec. 2, 2017, when Boston College held a 2-0 edge over the Terriers after 20 minutes. In the 12 games since that eventual loss to the Eagles and before tonight, BU had led after the opening stanza eight times and been tied on four occasions.
  • Bowers remained hot by scoring in the third period. It is the fifth time in six games he has scored a goal and the seventh time in the last eight for BU where he has collected a point. Bowers leads all freshmen nationally with his 16 goals on the year.
  • BU did not score a power play goal for the first time since Jan. 13, going 0-for-2 on the night. The run of seven straight games with a power play strike was the longest for BU since 2014-15.
  • With just two power play attempts tonight, the Terriers have a total of just six power play attempts over their past four games combined. It is the fewest over a four-game stretch for BU since at least 2009-10.
  • BU saw its nine-game unbeaten streak snapped. The Terriers had gone 7-0-2 since Jan. 6.
  • With a goal and an assist, it is the fourth multiple point game of Cockerill's freshman campaign and his first since Dec. 1 at Boston College.
  • BU dips to 33-9 all-time against Northeastern in the Beanpot and 30-23 in the Beanpot final. The Huskies have only won the Beanpot five times in its 66 years, but defeated BU in the final four of those five years.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers return to action on Friday night when they face UConn at the XL Center in Hartford.
  • BU is 1-0-1 this year against the Huskies, beating UConn, 6-3, in Hartford on Oct. 21 but playing to a 2-2 tie on Oct. 20 at Agganis Arena.
