WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite sophomore
Max Mahoney posting a game-high 25 points, the Boston University men's basketball team lost a nail biter at American, 60-56, on Wednesday night.
With the loss, the Terriers (12-14, 8-7 PL) are now tied-for-fourth in the Patriot League standings with Lehigh, one game behind both Colgate and Navy with Holy Cross in sole possession of sixth place at 7-8.
TURNING POINT
- After senior Nick Havener gave BU a 55-53 lead with 3:54 left in regulation, the Eagles scored five straight with two free throws from Larry Motuzis and a 3-pointer from Sam Iorio following his own steal.
- BU had an opportunity to tie the game at 2:15 with three free throw attempts, but only made one of them.
- The Terriers missed their final five field goal attempts following the trip to the line, as Sa'eed Nelson gave American a 60-56 lead on a layup resulting from an offensive rebound with 26 seconds left in regulation.
THE SETUP
- The teams traded baskets for much of the first half with sophomore Tyler Scanlon giving BU an 18-17 lead at 8:50 on a jumper.
- American though hit three-straight 3-pointers and later added a trey with the free throw to push its lead to 31-24 at 4:50.
- Leading by as many as nine (33-24), the Eagles flushed two free throws with 6.5 seconds remaining to grab a 35-28 halftime lead.
- Nelson started the second with a layup to match American's largest lead of the game (37-28).
- Down 39-32, the Terriers hit back-to-back buckets and eventually pulled within one at 12:26 (41-40), 10:27 (45-44) and 5:44 (51-50).
- BU finally retook the lead (53-51) for the first time in the second half at 5:11 on Scanlon's layup and free throw.
GAME NOTES
- Shooting 10-of-14 from the field and 5-of-7 at the line, Mahoney reached 20+ points for the fifth time this season.
- Besides tallying 14 points, senior Cedric Hankerson a season-high four steals to move into a tie for fourth all-time at BU in steals (171) with BU Hall of Famer Tunji Awojobi ('97).
- The Terriers outscored American in the paint (38-22) and off turnovers (21-11).
- Freshman Walter Whyte (10.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg in PL) missed his third straight game due to injury.
- American went 9-of-25 (.360) from behind the arc and held the Terriers to a season-low two treys on 14 attempts (.143).
- After a 19-of-24 FT (.792) performance against Holy Cross this past Saturday at home, BU went 12-of-21 (.571) at Bender Arena, while American shot 9-of-13 (.692).
- Iorio led the Eagles with 22 points (five 3FGs), 10 rebounds, six blocks and five assists, while Nelson had 17 points.
- Following the loss, BU leads the all-time series, 9-5.
NEXT UP: NAVY
- The Terriers will return to Case Gym for their final two home games of the regular season, starting with Navy on Saturday at 12 p.m.
- Prior to tip-off on the CBS Sports Network, BU will honor four seniors – Will Goff, Cedric Hankerson, Nick Havener and Eric Johnson.
- BU won the last meeting at Navy on Jan. 20 (75-68).
